In the Enterprise of Mullins last
week. Mr, J. O. Norton attempts to
answer an editorial which appeared
in this paper a few weeks ago. We
do not deem it necessary to say anything
further on the subject as ho
has utterly failed to answer the arguments
set forth in the editorial.
He writes a long article, it is true,
but it gains its length from a weak
attempt at sarcasm and ridicule.
But before we leave the subject we
will stale that Mr. Norton entirely
omits the chief reason why we so
llatly refused to publish his article.
When ho handed it to us with therequest
that it l)e published, we re^
plied that wc would read it and then
^ tell him whether it could be published
or not. We had read but a few
lines on the first pago when Mr. Norton
commanded us to stop, as he
could not allow us to read it unless
we would first promise to publish it.
We told him that wc deemed it one
of our rights as an editor, to read all
matter offered for publication before
promising to publish it, and if he do
nied us this right in this case, of
course his article would not be published.
He wanted the editor to
make an iron clad promise to publish
an article that the editor had never

seen. His course was difficult to ,
understand. It simply meant that
his article contained matter that he
knew was objectionable. This is
one reason why his article was refused
publication.
The charge that I do not write my '
own editorials is absolutely false.

As to the typewriter, 1 will
say that as my business increases I
shall eninlov such heln as 1 nmv find
necessary, and whether I choose to
employ a typewriter or write my articles
by hand, I shall try to work in
the interests of Horry and her people
and leave all the ' loafing" for
him who has ever shown, we think, a
constitutional tendency toward that
kind of thing.
The charge that Mr Scarborough
used his inlluonce with Mr. Hreeden,
the supervisor of the census, to have
appointments made in his (Scarborough's)
interest and against lion,
.lames is absolutely false as shown by
a letter from Mr. Hreeden now on I
file in Mr. Scarborough's olliee and
open to the inspection of anybody.
Here is Mr. Hreeden's own language
copied from the letter:
"Von (Scarborough) are responsi
ble for the failuto of no man in Horry
county to receive an appointment;
any report or charge to the contra
ry ?s absolutely untrue."
We will doubtless publish this letter
in full in some issue in the near
fut ure.

The Bucksport Baseball team was
recently organized with Messrs. J.
W. Little and John S Buck as managers.
It is hoped that in all our
contests the name Bucksport shall
be a synonym of victory. On account
of the excellent work of our
pitcher, Mr. Richardson, and the
constant practice of the team, we
have every reason to believe that it
shal' be so.
On last Friday a party of pleasure
seekers from Eddy Lake, Port Harrelson
and Bucksport began making
a journey to the town by the sea.
At Bucksville thev were joined by
Mrs. M. S. Buck aud-her two guests,
Mrs. E. N. Shaw, of Cameron. Texas,
and Miss Bailie Foster, of Nashville,
Tenn , in whose honor the trip
was given. As tr.is was the first
visit of the party to that place they
were all delighted with the situation
and prospects of the new town by
the sea. A welcome shower drove
the party into the house where the
chaperone soon spread an elegant
collation tempting the appetite of
all. Donning their bathing suits
the party repaired to the strand to
allow the Nashville beauty to take
her first dip in the murmuring
waves of the dark blue sea. Too
soon was the command homeward
ho! heard.
And ere the sun had sunk to rest
In the shadow of the west,
The Waccamaw we had crossed
And left the waves on which we
tossed.
The words we heard o'er and o'er
Was again to see t he shore,
And what a pleasure it would he,
To once more visit the town by
the sea

Deaths,
Died on Juno 27th 1000, Mr. fames
T. Mux, aged about do years, lie
leaves a wife and four small children
to mourn his loss. His remains
were interred at (food Hope church,
of which he was a consistent member.
Mrs. Louisa Martin, wife of K. M.
Martin died .Inly 11th 1000. utfed
about 05 years. She had been aeon*
sistcnt member of Good Hope
church for quite a number of years
and before her death expressed herself
at bein?j fully prepared for the
end. She leaves an aj^ed husband
and a lar^o circle of relatives and
friends to mourn her departure.
