HORRY AND THE TOBACCO 1NDUSTRY.
He who runs may road the hwlding
signs of prosperity in thiseounty.
It has not oomo;t)ut it has start
od. The beginning of permanent and
valuable improvement are seen on
every hand in town aSid noticeable
upon every farm we pass in the country.
Faces are brighter, steps are
quicker; the light of higher purpose
sparkles in the eye, and the vim of
a renewed spirit speaks in the voice
of our friends. Trade is brisker,
though prices are higher. For the
hand has gathered energy and the
heart strength of purpose as the
worker handles even some of the re
ward of his work and the toiler linds
a few more of the results of his toil
staying with him bv his plow.
And he who runs may read tie
conditions of. and the reasons of
these signs of budding prosperity,
it is purely and simply a well (list rib
uted increase in the amount of money
in circulation among our people.
Some five or six years ago a young
man then connected with this paper
made a careful approximation of the
pel* capita of money circulation then
in this county, lie interviewed
business men. farm "s, and tax ollicials
and reached a conclusion something
like this: AI ii -a' 20.000 people,
say 4,000 families, were called
on to pay some $20,000 taxes and
found it exceedingly hard to do so.
in more man one instance, it was
learned that a part of tin1 property
itself, on account of lack <>f income,
had to be sold to get money to pay
the taxes. In some portions of the
county it was estimated that there
was hardly 50 cents per capita; in
others, where crops were beginning
to be diversified and tobacco was
being planted some, the per
capita was higher -estimated at
some five or six dollars for parts of
one or two small townships. For
the whole county the estimate w is
about $2.ho during the fall of the
year. This is less than Mexico's
per capita, about t he same as China's.
It would be interesting to have a
^ fairly correct approximation of the
present per capita circulat ion during
the busiest season of the year. We
may say with some assurance, from
what we do know, that there is more
money in general circulation to-day
in xlie county t han lias been at anv
time during the last twenty yeais

have a money crop, tobacco, whicl

there has been a higher price for cot
ton this fall; and there has been n
steady increase of strength in tin
timber and lumber markets.
Wc have heretofore depended on
our exports of cotton and naval
stores mainly, a little lumber, a few
shingles, now and then a barrel ol
fish from the coast, and beginning
only a year or so ago, some few packages
of tobacco from the Northern
corner, and on these alone for our

money flowed in, and whatever nrofits
were made on hotli these exchanges

lodgment in the merchant's pocket,
and were invested in foreign enter
prises or hoarded and carried away
when enough was accumulated to
start business in a more progressive
section. The few honorable exceptions
to thi* migration rule
. among these who made money in
Horry des rvo every credit for their
expressed confidence in the future of
their county, and should have the
reward laecrui.g to such expressed
e >n faience.
It is pretty much the same old
thing with us as to marketing our
cotton and naval stores, except
there has been a little increase in
prices this full. Hut the marketing
of the tobacco we are beginning to
produce is quite a different, thing.
It is paid for in cash on a directly
j compelitive market. The money it
: solf passes through the producer's
I hands, A million, a half million, <>r
a hundred pounds of tobacco brings
its market value in cash money into
immediate circulation in the very
community in which it was raised.
A few months of such ha\e certainly
had a great effect upon this town
and county The county probably

there is a growing eonlidenee that
we will develop a Southern demand
a-- well as a Southern supply of eot
ton which will aid the good feeling
of the cotton planter; good shipping
facilities are attracting truck larm
er> to new lands and extending a
great industry; the Far Kaste.n
market for bright tobaccos is hardly
fairly opened. There is reason for
our sincere hope that the light we
see is the light of a new day. that
the stimulation the industries if our
county feels, in conuron with the
whole South, is from the bounding
vigor of new life and healthy growth
and not merely ex-nicotinn.

by that body cannot now be
foreseen or determined, but certainly
some measure can be found which
will (>nsure a more genteel and bus
