Mr. Monro's condition lias not improved, but as lie i? old and quite feeble, his family wished to have him with them. .1. Tobacco Notes. Mr. P. M. Pickett, of High Point, N. C., was on our warehouse Hoop this week and expressed surprise at the appearance of things and the business that Conway is doing in tobacco. Mr. Pickett is a large manufacturer of tobacco and says t hat he will have a brother on this market next season. Jt would bo a good tiling for both farmer and buyer, if the farmers would bring in their tobacco before the weather gets cold, as it saves in the handling. Cold dry weather is bad on tobacco. 11, does not look so well and breaks up so badly that it will affect the price. We desire to sec large breaks of good tobacco next week. Theio were very large sales on Tuesday and prices seemed good, There were only two small piles taken in on this largo break, which speaks well for prices at the Horry Warehouse. Mr, J. P. Allsbrook, of Sanford, sold quite a lot of tobacco here tins week and states that his tobacco crop will double cotton as a money crop. The ltowell?Grainier homicide case which was tried here last week attracted more notice than any case t ried in our courts within our rocol lection. The prominence of the parties and thofact that tlie defend ants are young men added interest to the occasion. Tho verdict was a surprise to tin friends of the accused. The defendant Itowell admitted the killing of the Klvington boys but pleaded solf-detense. The defendant Grainger was present but denied any participation in the killing. The prisoners counsel arifued to the.lnrv that the plea of self defense was fully made out,?they maintained then and still insist that the verdict should have been Not (Juilty. Of course, in a case of this Kind public opinion doubtless had its intluence upon the trial. The friends c f the delendants think they should have been acquitted?the friends of the prosecution think the verdict was a correct one and the sentence imposed just. Hut many people, now that the trial is over, express the opinion that perhaps after all these young men were excusable for the crime committed. It is a notable fact in the case that the testimony of the defendants and the only eye witness as to the incidents of the killing was not contradicted, either by the testimony or by circumstances. The Jury must haw- disbelieved what they said as to what occurred. Since the trial the young men have held up bravely and still say that while they deplore the unfortunate affair they feel sure that what How ell did had to be d< no in order to protect their own lives. A notice of application for bail is pending and a notice of appeal has been given. The charge of Judge 1 tenet was a magnificent one. lCvery proposition of law requested by defendant's counsel was charged without modification, and indeed the whole law of homicide was so clearly and forcibly explained as to bring forth words of commendation from both state's attorney and prisoners' counsel. It was a masterpiece, of learning. Our sympathy goes out not only to the young men who have been convicted but to their family and friends who rank among the best people of the county. Bryan the Democratic Leader. It is certainly true that Mr. Bryan is more idolized by his followers this year than he was during the campaign of 1800. He has personal qualities which seem to grow upon the plain people of the country, and as Air. Watterson says, it is likely enough that he may carry the Democratic convention by acclamation. But the Bryan Democracy in 11)00, as in 1890, will differ considerably, in so far as its leading men are concerned, from tho Democratic party that was headed by Mr, Cleveland. Those Democrats who had thought that Bryanism as represented by the Chicago platform would have evaporated in four years, and that it would be nos-uble to vp';toi?o lli<> Palmer and Buckner Democ rats in 1900 to their old places of honor at the Democratic board, begin to sees that they were mistaken. Mr. Bryan it. the real as well as the nominal leader of his party, and hp has oven less compromise in his make-up than Mr. Cleveland had. Mr. Cleveland, indeed, was known toeare something about the character of the party plat forms on thp several occasions when he was running for the I'pesidmjcy; but Mr. Bryan is a man who cares even more. About tifty witnesses all told, wore examined and every ett'ort was made to get at the facts. Commencing early Tuesday morning and eontinning until breakfast time on Saturday morning. lion. II. II Woodward, associate counsel for the State, made really his debut at the bar though having appealed at the Spring term, his dating will go back to the Howell Klvington ease as his promising career shall be reviewed in the future. Mr. Wc od ward spoke for forty eight minutes and made a fine inmression on all who heard him. lion. It. II. Scarborough, associate counsel for the defense, in his usual manner addressed the jury for an hour and twenty minutes we niiuht sav unusual manner for perhaps Mr Scarborough took a step in advance of a]! former olTorts. Solic'lor Johnson argued the case for two hours and his able hundliiu.' of the matter increases his standing as a prosecuting attorney. The ease was given to tho jury at II o'clock over which they worked un j til about day the following morning. Judge lionet the night previous had made arrangements to remain here until the following Monday. The jury having agrecti the court ollicers were summoned from their beds and court convened between i six and seven o'clock. IVople un accustomed to early rising, hurried fo the court house at this early hour to hoar the result. The verdict was for two offenses for each one of the defendants. All present seeming impressed with the gravity and solemnisation of the scene, the fatlj ?rs and other relativesot both young men being present. Strong arguments were made by both Messrs. Scarborough and Itrvant, counsel for defense for a new trial, which the court overruled. Kowejl was &ont??noed to hard labor in tho penitentiary in each case for five years and one month, and Grainger in each ease for three years , and one month at hard labor in the i penitentiary, or, on the public works of the county. An appeal was taken to a higher court and as the day advanced the anxious and eager spectators who had been lu re several days began to go home. Public expectation was at a high pitch and various were the opinions expressed as to the verdict that would be reached, not a few spoke ( Confidently of acquittal, many ox pcctpd a verdict of manslaughter tempered with mercy while others looked for a verdict of murder. The impression favorable to Grainger seamed to bj? general and the verdict as to him seemed a surprise, lighter punishment being expected. Kmminent counsel did everything possibl ? for defendants and no blame can be laid at- their door, No' since our recollection can we remember a ease of more public interest and upon which a jury lias deliberated so long. > i v . The young men, whom the law any* arc guilty, will be able to servo out their sentences and come forth then, comparatively young men as they have not yet reached their majority. Jane Johnson, colored, convicted of grand larceny, was found guilty and sentenced to four months at hard labor in the county jail. Manager's Election.
