Judge Bennett made an extended
charge to the jury covering all the
points of law likely to come before
them. The people are favorably
impressed with his manner and especially
pleased with his determination
to have order in the court room.

a number of stitches, as all the lingers
were cut, but none entirely cut
off.

enlarging our court house. Fully
three-fourths of the people anxious

any case of unusual interest renders

court house. We hope that the
grand jury in their report at this
court will make some suggestions
towards enlarging the building.

are on trial, before the people, we
will be satisfied with the verdict, as
every man who has raised any tobacco
previous to this year knows
whether he pays more under the

cheek to charge more, they were

The Act says in substance, gentlemen,
you are working too cheap,

It is true Marion County is our
former home, the home of our youth,
a word of which we have never been
ashamed. Uncle Jerry appears to

est of Horry, my present home, to
the mercantile interest of my former
home, but am like Uncle Jerry
savs he is, in regard to tobacco, not
a leaf. Sol have nothing at stake
in Marion county All my interest

Georgia Cotton Crop One-Third

Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 28.?Official
returns to the State department of
agriculture show that the cotton
crop in Georgia this year will bo
about one-third off. From estimates
baaed on the regorts from 75 counties
the crop will amount to about
1,000,000 bales, against 1,530,000
last year.
Court News.
Mrs. Elvington, mother of the licensed
and the fathers of the defen
lants Ilowell and Grainger, all occupied
seats in the bur, besides numerous
family connections on both
sides being present.
Floyds township was largely represented,
it being the home of the
defendants The number of witnesses
both for the State and the
defence was large.
The HowellElvington case was
called Tuesday morning at 9:110.
The court house being filled at once
with people who seemed to have a
lively interest in the case.
The whole day on Tuesday was
taken up in securing a jury and the
examination of the State's witnesses.
Hon. 11. H. Woodward will assist
the Solicitor in the prosecution.

All of yesterday was consumed in
the examination of witnesses for the
defense. We will give particulars

Turner Campbell, colored, assault
and battery of a high and aggravated
nature. Guilty of assault and
battery. Sentence thirty days on
the public works, or line of $25.
Tobacco Notes.
We noticed Monday loads after
loads of tobacco com in# up from the
wharf to the Ware House. Upon
inquiring we learned that this tobacco
was from Williamsburg county
away down Welow Georgetown.
The people shipping us this tobacco
have been selling at Florence. Darlington
and Danville, but have turned
to Conway as they can do better
hero.
Prices still hold up on the Hour of
our -Tobacco Warehouse. The
large crowd of farmers who attended
the sales Monday the 2nd were well
pleased with the prices paid for the
weed.
The sales are quite large considering
the cool weather which inter
feres very much with the handling
of tobacco.
Mr. Jewett Spencer, a largetobacco
dealer of Winston, N. C., was: at
our tobacco sales this week. Mr.
Spencer's pardner, Mr. Frank Spencer.
who has been one of Conway's
tobacco buyers since the opening of
the market, has bought largely this
season.
Mr. A. IV Lane sold four lots ol
tobacco on the Tuesday's sale at
Horry Ware House at an average
of $21).7f> per one. hundred pounds.
Who says Conway is not the place
to sell? We noticed pile after pile

Nothing But Surrender,
Washington, Oct. 2.?A dispatch
from General Otis was received at
the war department this morning
giving an account of his meeting
with the insurgent envoys. (Jon.
Otis said the interview with Aguinaldo's
representatives indicated
that the leaders were inanoouvering
solely with a view to secure recognition
of the in?argent government.
All such overtures were rejected,
and the envoys were informeu that
the only thing the United States
would recognize was a white flag
and the grounding of arms. Ife also
informed the envoys thus such capitulation
on the part of the insurgents
should come fjijickly in order
to avoid the conseouoneos of active
war, as the United States did not
intend to permit any delay in the
matter.
The course of Gen. Otis is approved
t?y tlje war department. Secretary
Root took the dispatch from
(Jen. Otis over to the White House
for the president's consideration.
