Dewey is a man of surprises. lie
surprised the Spanish in Manilla
Bay and also surprised our people
by entering New York Bay when
not expected.
The Dewey celebration in Washington.
while not so magnificent as
mat, 01 rsew \ork, was equally gracious.
The Admiral is to be congratulated
that the rush is over and
that he can now take a rest.
In the October death list of the
Knights of Honor, we notice that
there are eight from this state.
This means sixteen thousand dollars
to the families thus deprived of their
head. Have you made any provision
of the kind for those dependent
upon you?
Tilk South Carolina delegation to
the Dewey celebration, like Dewey
arrived ahead of time. They were
well received and cheered at several
points on their way to their quarters.
The delegation numbered
ubout 350 and is said to be the largest
State delegation South of New
York. ?
In the Dewey parade last Friday,
Sampson rode in the ninth carriage
and Schley in the thirty-sixth carriage,
but the pi -pie were aware
when the hero of Santiago appeared
ard cheered the i'gh< man. The
occupant of the thirty '. t h carriage
was the next man of importance in
the procession
Each dav looks mnro wnvliUn in

bloodshed is not far ofT. A conflict
is inevitable and a clash imminent.
The consequence of war is terrible,
and we shall hope that a speedy adjustment
of the South-African difTl- j
culties may be brought about soon.
The Iloers are ready to fight, and
the 'English government will take no
step backward. The consequence is
war.
There are a lot of people who
wish to take the great admiral from
his present position and make a
president of him. It is not necessary,
in order to bo great to be president,
and we are inclined to the
il-i r\ ?
<j|jiiiiuii mm, i;ewey nas rio special
hankering after the job. Very few
, men have had the grace to decline
the offer of the presidency, and we
don't know anything of the power of
Admirial Dewey's resistance.
Tiik South Carolina delegation to
the Dewey celebration had a royal
time in New York, being accorded
marked distinction at many points.
Our men carried themselves like sol
diers should, and won many plaudets.
It was a great gathering.
The greatest that has over met' in
this country to honor any single
man and the lesson should be productive
of good. While it emphasizes
to us. how sweet a boon is lib
erty, it should impress us with
grave consideration respecting all
people who are endeavoring to se-l
cure the same benefits.
