Burroughs School.
The Burroughs School opened on
last Monday with an enrollment of
over twice that of a year ago. Over
sixty were enrolled the Ih st day and
several others have entered since.
If we rc.inemher correctly this is I he
greatest number that the school has
ever opened with.
Having graded the pupils, the
teacher will have more time to give
to each class, and consequent ly much
better work can be done.
With everything so favorable for
having an excellent sclio d. we hoj e
that all the patrons and citizens of
the district will take a more lively
interest in the intellectual development
of our children. There can be
but little excuse for the pupil's absence
from school now, as the cost is

Mrs. Win. K. Dardwick, one of
our oldest citizens, died yesterday
about one o'clock, having been siel<
for the past three weeks. Sh3 was
a good woman and will be missed in
the community. With no data at
hand we cannot give particulars.
The family have the sympathy of
the entire community. , Will e. dea
vor to give a more extended account
next week.

Messrs. J. A. and It. 10. L. Drown, !
oPChadbourn, were hero last week
and we understand bought out the
lumber and milling interests of Mr. '
J. II. Williamson and will at once j
enlarge the plant and begin operations
on an increased scale. The
fact, of the Messrs. Drown investing
their money here is an indication of
the progress of Conway, and we are
glad to have them come.

It is a goousign to see the schools
and colleges opening well. In several
instances, pupils seeking admittance
have been turned oil'. We
learn that a large number failed to
get in at Clemson.
The Seacoast road is growing Ion
ger every day and shortening the
distance between its terminus and
the beach. It has reached a point
about eight miles from town, leaving
four or five miles to be completed,
which will be done in time for next
season.

Model Towns.
The city of flreentowu Ind. is per
haps lite least governed city of its
size in America. Although it has
H,000 inhabitanth the town has no
j mayor, marshal, policeman or any
other peace ollleer. not even aeon
stable. Tin* town is governed hv a
l)oard of trustees, who meet once a
month to allow electric li?_rnt bills,
oas. water and other claims. A justice
of the peace residing in tin1 suburbs
resigned a few weeks a?p>, I av
inefno official business. The city
provides for no mayor or policeman
and the duties of a marshal are per
formed when required, which is
very seldom, by the street commis

The town of IVlzor, K. C., 15 miles
from here, has over <>.000 people and
a dozen manufacturing1 enterprises,
besides its bitf cotton factories, with
the full equipment of .stores, churches,
schools, and etc., and it has no
charter, no mayor, council, trustees
or police, or municipal olliccrs of
any kind. A magistrate has an of
lice there and his constable has little
work to do. In Piedmont, nearby
and in a dozen other factory
towns in this state the conditions
are similar, but Pel/or is the largest
of these uuoflieercd communities.
Nearly all of them are inhabited on
ly by white people and nearly all of
them have records of from ten to
twenty years without serious crime.
