Va , was drowned while bathing in i the surf at Wrightsville, last Saturday morning. The body was recovered in a few hours and taken home for burial. Professor S. W. Carwilo is here from his Summer vacation, and Miss Rowland is expected to arrive tomorrow. The school will open next Monday and it is hoped that all who expect to enter will be on hand at the opening. If the fever had to come we are' thankful that it was late in making j its appearance. Jones, of tho Cool Spring section died on Wednesday of last week and was buried the following day at Cool Spring cemetery, a largo number of people attending the burial, "Mr. Jones death re- ! moves one of the old landmarks of1 that section. Mi ss Ruth Hurroughs and her | brother, Mr. Arthur Hurroughs were summoned home a few days ago on account of the extreme illness of their sister. Mrs. H. L. Ruck, Jr. They were met at (leorgetown last Saturday night by special steamer, and leaving at once reached here early Sunday morning. The quartermaster's department | lias landed (>Ul) head of horses and mules at Manila. There are 5,500 on the sea and arrangements are about completed to ship 2,400 more j more within a few weeks. This will i supply the cavalry brigade with hor- ; ses and the Philippine army with mules for t rnnsportion. The New York Racket Store is making some additional improvements in the way of lighting the Iong store. An oblong opening has been made in the second floor which will furnish more light and when finished will also add to the appearance of the building. King believes In turning on the light. A little excitement was raised here Monday evening at the killing of a supposed mad dog. The dog belonged to Mr. C. J. liryant here, and having showed peculiar traits of late was shut up in order to await developments. lie got out and commenced to snap around at the children and getting into the street was shotby deputy sheriff G. J. Watts. No one had been bitten by him and it was fortunate that he was killed in time. The meeting of the Teachers' Association last Friday night was an intellectual treat to those who attended. Several ladies read essays and as many gentleman spoke on questions pertinent to t he times and t ho occasion. Professors Slmrpe and Mollis indulged the audience with a rare treat the former speakinff mainlv on the nrneticnl end while the latter spoke on the practical also he interspersed his remarks with the beautiful. The teachers here attending the Summer School wore all present and we have no doubt will profit by what they heard, and will bo better propared for the responsible duties that will confront, them than before. Tobacco Notes. The "Warehouse Hats" stood around in their "biled shirts" and rolled the price up to f>0 cents per pound on a lot of tobacco at the Horry Warehouse last week. Sept. 9.?The ease against J. Halie Stephenson, charged with committing rape resulted today in a verdict of not guilty. This was the fourth trial, there being three mistrials heretofore in the case. Key West, Via., Sept. 10--Twentythree new cases of yellow fuvor and two deaths have been reported in the last hours. The situation is still very gloomy and large numbers of pcoplo are being sent to detention camp at Dry Tortugas. The Rev. Edward Th )mson, I)., delivered his lecture on True Americanism in the Methodist church on Wednesday the 5th inst. Dr. Thomson is president of two law schools, a man of national reputa tion, a forceful and charming speaker. While a busy lawyer and n preacher, he devotes one-third of ids time to the redemption and preservation of the American Sabbath. Sessions was the scene of a happy gathering, t>?e occasion being the marriage of Miss Mattie Sessions, of Adrian, to Mr. Alexander Causey, of Vardelle, Rev. J. II. Standly, of Loris, performing the ceremony in a most solemn and impressive manner. After tin* cere mony an elegant din net was served and the bridal party and guests spent the evening pleasantly. Miss Sessions is the da ighter of our townsman Mr. .1. T. Sessions and one of our most charming young ladies and Mr. Causey is a popular and promising young farmer of Floyd's township. Buck, Jr. ??n?w The pen falters at our bidding in attempting to describe our feelings at the death ot a loved one and we stand helpless in the midst of a great sorrow and try to say "Thy Will lie Done." Mrs. II. L. Ruck, Jr., whose beautiful young life has ever been the charm of a happy home died Tuesday morning about b o'clock and she has passed into the blissful beyond, where no pain will ever more be known. For several days her life had hung as by a thread and fluctuations in nor condition had given her friends hope to believe that she would bo restored. Possibly, to none is the blow so severe us to her young husband, to whom she linked her young life but a few mouths ago. both starting out upon a path all radiant with happiness, but a shadow has fallen across his young life, which the tender sympathy of his friends would lift, and whose pain t hey would mitigate were they able to do so. Mrs. HucIc was the third daughter of the late Mr. F. (!. lhirroughs. Her mother, four sisters and three brothers who survive her were at her bedside. She was a cultured i ehristinn woman and greatly endeared to all who knew her and her last hours here fully emphasized the 'beautiful character of a christian life. Mrs Melvina Smith and daughter of Dublin, (Sa., arc visiting relatives in this vicinity.?Mr. and Mrs. J. II. Smith, of Cool Spring visited relatives here last Sunday, I lev. K. M. Merrilt is conducting a meeting of days at Poplar church this week. Mrs. Fanny Martin, wife of A. M. Martin, died at her home near town at 8:15 p. m., Saturday Sept. '2, 1891). She was about 30 years of age, and leaves a husband and four small children, the youngest only four weeks old, with quite a number of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Her remains were interred in the Thompson grave yard the following day at 3:30 o'clock p. m. We extend to the bereaved family our warmest sympathies in their sad alltiction. J. N. J. It is hoped that all pupils in the school (.istriet will enter then, so that the proper grading can bo done at the beginning. The school will be classified on the graded school plan, and pupils will be required to enter those eight grades which will be formed. The trustees have ordered that a fee of one dollar must be paid for each term of four, or four and a half months. This fee will be used to supplement the regular apportionment. and will lengthen the session to <S or !) months.
