Tiikiik was somewluit of a wrangle
in the convention last Saturday as
to the Doris and Floyds delegations,
tin* former sending two sets of delegates,
one of which the convention
deemed illegal, seating the other.
Floyd's township was disturbed over
the seating of Mr. J CJ. Floyd, claiming
that he was not a delegate and
not entitled to a seat in the con von
lion. Mr. Floyd put up a counter
claim, which was considered favorably,
whereupon, delegates P. 11.
Norton, Alonzo Jackson and M. G.
Cook of the Floyd's delegation withdrew
from the convention.
Tiikrk is no good reason why the
President should have appointed a
negro post master at Florence a
town of about live thousand inhabitants.
Such an appointment would
liover have been made in a place of
similar size in any Northern State.
Lake City shows too prominent in
the matter and a disposition to pun
ish the people of South Carolina.
However odious and embarrassing
this may be to the. Florence people,
we are not expecting any trouble to
be visited on the post master. The
president is responsible for it.

Mil. Walter L. Mishoe nominated
by Saturday's convention for Clerk
of Court, is a young man of much
promise and who is very popular
throughout the county nnd particularly
so in Galivants Ferry township,
his home. Mr. Mi shoe came
into public view last year when he
entered the primary con testing for
the Treasurers office and though defeated,
received a very flattering
vote, ills popularity could not be
downed suddenly and he will succeed
to one of the most important county
offices. A man of pleasing address
and for several years associated
with one of the largest business
concerns in the county, he is thought
to be fully qualified for the position
to which he has beer, recommended.
Hon. John A McDermott has been
justly complimented by the people of
Horry in nominating him to the Senate.
For the past seven years he
lias in a most efficient manner dis
charged the duties of Clerk of Court
and has gained the esteem of his fellow
citizens as evidenced in last
Saturday's convention. We believe
that the office seeks the man and
in surrendering his present position
to serve his county in any capacity,
he shows the true, the proper spirit,
for there is no one who doubted his
ability to succeed himself in his present
office, all of which he gives up
at the call of his people. The county
will have a safe representative, a
man who will take care of her inter
esis and who will not be found sleeping
on the post of duty. His record
in the clerk 's ofllce, as a member of
the constitutional convention and
>esidcs a successful farmer all commend
him most favorably.

A frightful and fatal accident oc
curred near town Tuesday evening
in which Mr. Eddie Dusenbui y lost
his life, lie had cut on one side of
a sapling and given the axe to another
party, going oft and lying down
under a shelter near by, not apprehending
the least danger. The sapling
in falling, fell against a tree
about ten inches in diameter, which
was in an inclined position, when it
crushed the shelter killing Mr. l)usenbury.
George Edwin Dusenbury,
son of Sir. J. E. Dusenbury, was one
of the early Cuban volunteers and
on his return home last April married
Miss Delia, daughter of Mr. Jas.
W. Edwards. The young wife and
the whole family have the tenderest
sympathy of the community.

Evan Norton Crouch, only son
of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Crouch, of

the mother at Chadbourn, on her
sorrowful return lomo with the

home by Mrs. Crouch's
brother and sister, Clarence and

for him. Hut for some wise reasons
in the dispensation of His Providence
the Lord transferred this bright,
beautiful and promising son to the
mansion prepared for him in the r
eternal Home of God. '
For us in this world of narrow
limitation and constant struggles, .
Heaven seems undergoing constant 1
changes which render it relatively
more attractive to the sojourners *1
here. To those who loved little '
Norton Crouch so dearly, Heaven ^
does not otter the same attractions w
to day that it did before. A son, a 1
grandson, a nephew is there. Not s
for naught does the Good Shepherd a
transfer the only lamb from the e
home on earth to the Paradise on a
high. The ways of Providence are a
mysterious; but, when we see as we h
are seen, the mystery will be solved;
we shall know. May the sadness of a

A pound of ru\v cotton is worth |
about a cents. When it is spun and
woven into fabricks it is worth from
25 cents to $1. according to the figures
of a Ifoston correspondent of
the New Orleans Picayune. Massachusetts
has H,000 spindles and annually
manufactures 1,250.000 hales
of cotton. This cotton she buys
from the South at 5 cents a pound.
After she has spun and woven this 1
cotton sl e sells a large part of it
back to us at 2"> cents to $1 a pound. 1,
That is why Massachusetts is rich

says the Picayune, "hews the wood
and draws the water; it does the I
drudgery of producing raw material
for the North to manufacture and
get rich upon. It is this which keeps
the South poor and always will, until
the Southern pe< pie shall manufacture
