Gknkkal Wi?kki t it litis sailed fur
the Philippines, where he is to take
active service in the army. No doubt
but that In1 will do his part well, as
will every American soldier there,
yet another rainy reason will succeed
this one. and another roinfotcontent
of the arinv be found necessary, if
the spirit of the Islanders is attuned
to the late patriotic address of Aguinuldo.
It is doubtless the determination
of this government to quell
the insurgents, and it looks as though
it were better to do quickly what is
necessary to be done. Strengthen
the army after the wet season is
over io ilie necessary poini ami accomplish
in short order what it will
otherwise take a long time to do. It
looks to us that the campaign will
go on interminably, unless the Filipinos
can be impressed with the idea
of the kind of government we intend
for them. Campaigning in this direetion
may accomplish something
continued slaughter seems to be of
no avail and we seem to be no nearer
the end.than when we begun.
Now for the rush! Opening sales
at the Horry Warehouse on the27th.
Pic-Nic ?t the Hnd of the Road, j
The first passenger coach on the
Seashore Railroad took a party of exeursionists
to the half-way point,
the present terminus of the road last
Thursday, where they were met by
Capt. Martin, who had anticipated
our coming and who received us most
cordially and entertained us very
pleasantly until a late hour in the
afternoon. The crossing of the Waecamaw
in the early morning, presented
a novel and pretty scene, there
being about twenty-live in the party
s\nd manv Ki n f mi m- L-;?,,l^ K.
used to transport them across the
river. On the opposite side, Mr.
Arthur Burroughs was waiting with
a nicely arranged car and soon had
us dashing along the new road. At
several points on this end. where the
road skirts tlie river, lovely views
are to be seen and in imagination,
we can see the private cars of "big
men" stopping hero md there to enjoy
the beautiesof \ Waceamaw. to
be found on this e 1 of the road.
All carried baskets and at an early
dinner hour?some! < v. why is it.
* excursionists are al hungry
a most tempting dinmr wa> spread
under one of the large tents prepared
by Messrs. Martin and Burroughs
for this occasion.. It is a busy place
and we would be glad if our people
could all see how vigorously the
work is being extended. After luncheon,
two young ladies of the par
tv recited several pieces each for us.
and the young people sang many
pretty songs, which added greatly to
our enjoyment. The workmen after
finishing their dinner, moved over
to our side and delighted us with
several songs, like they only can
sing, which was another pleasant
feature of the day. The party all
enjoyed the trip very much, no accident
of any kind occurring to mar
the days pleasure. The road will
be completed in time for next season
and the most sanguine expectations
of the success of :his movement are
entertained. In about one week
from now parties can reach the beach
from Conway in one hour by having
their teams to meet thorn at the ter
minus, which is only distant from
the seashore five miles.
Mr. Coles has shown himself to be
a live Warehouse Man His business
is to see that every lot of tobacco
brings its full value. Let the
planters stand to him, as he proposes
to stand by them, and Horry will
have a market of her own, equal or
superior to any in the South.

Mr. I. W. Cooper, of Wilmington,

Mr. .1. W. Lane, a hustling tobacco

of twelve barns of tobacco near

To my friends and the public:
1 cannot serve you ,?s Senator from

at the New York Backet

up a permanent market here. They
seem to realize the importance of
having a home market of their own.
