best plan of nomination. The chairman
of the executive committee is

Pandemonium reigns in Kentucky.
Por over a week the State Democratic
convention have been trying
to nominate a (Governor. So far
tliey have not succeeded and some
delegates have become disgusted at
the proceedings and gone home. It
is no hard matter to start a row in
"Old Kaintuck."
Gorman democrats are endeavor
i ng to defeat Ilryan's nomination at
the National convention next year.
They are promising him more than
one-third of the votes, which if fulfilled
would defeat the silver candi
date's nomination. There is no fear
of this game's working successfully
and is simply used for intimidation
Mr. Gorman was recently shelved in
his own State and to make a show of
doing something they will have to
look for a stronger man and where
is he, is what is troubling them.

this section has not diminished his
interest in our people, and he writes
especially to emphasize the general
approval of the public towards our

brought to justice through the regular
processes of .law. This incident
being out of the regular order of
things of late, has secured to Horry
county the congratulations of the
country, said action having been
published far and wide.
Another incident, which has occurred
since is equally praiseworthy
and shows what calmness and deliberation
can accomplish in a moment
of imminent danger. On the evening
of the 11th inst., the day of the
killing of Fred Green near Bucksvillc,
a party of some fifty negro
men and boys assembled in the road
at Mr. Dew's house - father of the
boy who did the killing and assumed
a threatening attitude. Mr. Dew
apprehending danger and also fearing
that his son might come up to
. the house while the crowd was there,
sent off for one or two of his neighbors,
who on their arrival and with
a little use of common sense suecedted
in dispersing the crowd and sending
them off home. Ifadyouns/ Dew
who was seen by his father approaching
the house, not been stopped,
there might have been a still more
serious endinc to the dnvc
Young Dew is in jail here and bail
lias not been asked for as yet, it be
in# thought best for him to remain
hero awhile. There has been no
demonstration around Mr. Dew's
since 'nor is there likely to lie.

to note an event of recent occurence,
which makes me proud of llorry
county, and which has been heralded
over the land as an honor to the
county and the State of South Carolina.
I refer to the example llorry
has set to the whole South of moral
restraint and conformity to law. in
the legal trial and punishment of the
two negroes for a supposed attempt
to ravish two white girls. Last
night while reading the Congregationalist,
a religious journal published
in this city and of a very wide
circulation, I saw the following notieoof
the'matter. In writing about
lynching.--, its lfiditor said:
"Fortunately there are some signs
of bettci days in the South. The
white men of llorry County: S. C
were publicly commended by Judge
AltVrich last week for refraining from
lynching negroes guilty of outrage
and for turning them over loomcers
of the law. .Judge Aldrich said

I resided in I lorry and in Conway
for more than twenty years and can
testify to the law abiding' character
of her citizens. When considering
with my revered friend Judge Munro,
where 1 would settle as a young
lawer, he said to me, "Co to Horry. '

and primitive, but good clients and
"True us Steel." I also so find them
and after an absence of nearly twenty
years 1 still honor and love them.
The primitiveness is passing away,
but 1 rejoice to see that they are
still as '"True as Steel" in their allegiance
to law and order, the ease
