themselves ns not being will pleased
at the extravagant number of persons
composing the Boards to conduct

They think that a more ecos

* Microbes in Hooks,
It is a f tot that has been wel
demonstrated that contagenus tlis
eases tnay be spread by means o
books which have beet) in the hand
of the sick or convalescing. A1
' the eruptive maladies, scarlatini
and varioloid among others, as wel
as diphtheria, may bo transmitted it
this manner. A daily contemporary
refers to the fact that throughout
Europe, and especially itt England
strenuous efforts, by the enforcemen
of sanitary measures in public li
braries, are being made to stop this
source of contagion At Edinburg
already a regular service has boen
organized by which the directors of
libraries are notified each day of the
names and addresses of all those in
the city who are ill of contagious
diseases. The librarian thereupon
makes careful search to find is any
of their books have bten lent to any
of the houses specified. When such
is found to be the case, the health
department seizes the books, which
are then eithei disinfected or destroy-,
ed.
At Bradford, England, similar
measures are also in vogue, and an
effort is now being made to put them
in effect at London. This, however,
owing to the vast and dense population
of the city, will be difficult of
accomplishment.
In L'aris this plan will also be followed
in the near future. At present
the authorities of ihit city are
endeavoring to find a satisfactory
disinfectant . Experiments are being
made with the vapor of formic aldehyde,
which is produced by the
incomplete combustion of methylic
|alcohol in contact with the air and
incondescent platinum. This vapor,
in addition to its antiseptic proper
ties, is easily employed, and is
absolutely harmless to cloth and
paper, and its discovery will doubtless
hasten the adoption of similar
hygienic measures in the public
libraries of this country.
