weeks, lie was about thirty-five
years old and loaves a wife and three
children. The interment was made

doubt secure a large share of public

1857?served valiently continuously
through the late civil war in "The
Brooks Guards," Co. B. 10th, S. O.
Keginient until taken prisoner Do
cember loth 18G1, near Nashville,
Tenn. After hostilities ceased he
was released and returned to Horry
and engaged in the mercantile pursuits,
was happily married to Miss
Addie Cooper, Nov. 15th, 18GG, by
whom he leaves eight children surviving.
Close attention to business, pru
dent investments, active, energetic
and industrious believing in the principle
that labor overcomes all obstn- i
clcs and that labor it? a pleasure, he
accumulated a handsome fortune.
Friend to the nefcdy and unfortunate,
ho bestowed his charities discrimi
natinglv and the poor realize that,
they have lost a friend indeed. (Jen !
erous and appreciative as a husband,
kind and gentle but firm as a father
he was admired and loved as few
h usbundsjiud fathers are.
llimself not possessing much
scholastic training yet he was a warm
friend and an enthusiastic support
cr of education and especially an
appreciative advocate of the education
of girls as tending to uplift and
refine the oncoming generation. He
was mainly the founder and promoter
of the Burroughs School (for whom
it was named) and was largely instrumental
in procuring the Library
for the school, which is the largest
and most select in the eastern portion
of the State. i

Knights of Honor, .July 4th 1888, ,
and continued an act:.ve and acceptable
member until the Supreme Die- (
tator of the Universe in His inscru- i
table wisdom transferred him from
the active and responsible duties and
employments of terrestrial manhood

ed this life on March, 7th. lie was

Soon after lie was united in marriage
to Miss Jano Kabon, and they lived
harmoniously together until his

trious, and one of the most success**
ful fanners in his township, lie
leaves a wife, three sons, two daught
ers and a host of friends' -to mourn
his departure, lie \vas a good neighbor
and ever ready to help the poor
and needy.

christian fortitude and fell asleep in
Jesus. A few evenings before'Jiis
death this writer saw him; shouting
and praising Mod.

Industrialism in Kussiu.
Many years may elapse before Rns

industrialism has recently been
shown in a remarkable manner at the
"All-Russian" exhibition in IsiijinNovgorod.
Besides her ex ten i\
sulphuric acid industry, Uussia iopening
up important manufacture
of chroiuute sails, vitro), phosphate ,
lead, zinc, tiu, strontium and ooppet
salts and mineral dyes. Platinum,
too, if almost a Russian monopoly.
In medicinal-plant growing the progress
of Russia is very great, Six
castor.oil factories, all working from
native-grown seed, wore represented
at the exhibition, and oils of peppermint,
wormwood, caraway, fennel,
anise and pine needles were also
shown. The output of Russian benzine
has grown from 31,000 gallons
in 1882 to nearly 1,570,000 gallons
in 1801. The petroleum industry is
the second largest in the world. One
firm alone owns 188niilesof petroleum
pipe lines. It has an enormous
fleet and owns 1,157 tank wagons for
the conveyance of its products by
rail. The industry of the dry distillation
of wood in Uussia is only
just beginning. In northern Russia,
away front the railways, there
are still many thousands of gquae
miles under wood, yet up to the present
only I 2 per cent, of all tho ro
sin and only a slightly larger proportion
of the turpentine used in
Russia have been of home manufacture.

The day of the chemical ex
ploitation of the Russia forests is
dawning, and within a few years the
country of the czar may export instead
of buy from abroad acetic acid,
wood napiha, acetone, wood vinegar
and acetate of lime. The import
ance of the Russian licorice jnicc and
licorice root industry is generally
known.
