Chancellor Johnson and Messrs
V*. .T. Montgomery, C. A Woods and
('. P. Quattlcbnmn went up to Laurens
on Thursday to argue a motion
before Judge Watts for the appointment
of a receiver for the property ;
of Smith & Burr, of Howard, Horry
County. The plaintiffs, " W. Wag*
ener & Co., and other creditors, are
seeking to set aside certain mortgages
executed by Smith & Burr in
December last on the ground that at :
that time Smith & Burr were wholly
insolvent, were about to close down
their business permanently and that,
therefore, the mortgages gi\en by
them were tantamount to an assign i
merit with preferred creditors.
Messrs Montgomery and Woods represent
tho plaintiffs and Messrs John j
sons & Quattlebaum the defendants.

The new county question which
was thought to be decided against <
the Dillon advocates, has sprung up i
again. As representatives of the
new county sympathizers, Judge i
Hudson and Mr. 1*. K. Sellers of 1)> 1 i
Ion, have claimed certain irregularis <
ties and frauds in the election and
will contest it on those grounds. Ti e ,
very small number of votes cast? <
0^5 for and 405 against the new i
county is a surprise to all, when it
is known that there are over 2,000 ]
registered voters within the proposed
county lines. Messrs. (!. A. Woods,

Wednesday next. !

Having seen in last Saturday's J
State, an article by I). A. Spivey, re- '
fleeting very unconiplimentary on '
myself aa Postmaster at this place, |1
I prefer using my county paper top
disseminate home news. p
It becomes my unpleasant duty to '
defend myself a second time against
the misleading pen of I). A. Spivey, |
the obnoxious journalist. Since the!
public must know something of tlie |
details of this private matter, the 4
\\ hole truth is this:
I wrote tho Post Oflice Department
that I wished them to investigate a j
discrepancy that existed for some
time, and that I could not under j
stand between M. 0. B , figures and
M.O. B., funds, and lhatif no error
could be found in my favor that they
would please act on a resignation I
sent in sometime ago.
After a few days their officer- a
perfect gentleman?came in, I told
him the circumstance. We went to
work, and after tw<> days work he
told me that there was no alarming
-hortage in M. O. B., account anil
that he had failed to find any evidence
whatever of an int< ntional
wrong on'iny p irt, 1 could make him
a bond for the money. I preferred
paying it at once it. order to
bo square up to date, which I did in
no longer time than it. took to count
it. Therefore, so f ir as I have ever
had any intimation, that "warrant
talk" (if 1). A. Spivey's is all "stuff."
Some of my bondsmen having divided
their property, the inspector
told mo I would have to strengthen
n. v bond. 1 replied that t lie remain
ing few months I would t ive to set e
would not justify the eff u t, and t!.I)

Tin; ih'X( D' \v tha? I had i' regard
to th<? mutter, my fried Howe! ,
whom I had recommendid with my
resignation, was appointed, which
was gratifying news to mc.
IVTr. Spivey seems to misconstrue
the intention the people had in con
tributing their charitable offerings
to eend him off to school, and thinks
they were fitting him to look after
matters, personal, public, or private
of every body.
The "sucker1' goes on in his arti
cle to give a description i 1. me as
though I was an escaped convict, says
I am "a man of about thirty years of
age."

This feeble effort to slur at mo as
the "pet" of the "new regime" is on
ly a betrayal of himself, prompted by
a spirit of chronic soreheadedness,
narrow-mindedness, prejudice and
unadulterated cussedness that will
last him to his grave.
