SUMTKll AND SOUTH PORT
RAILROAD.
(From the Southpo: t be i?i-r. |
The following address on the Sumter
and Southport Bail road was in ale yesterday
at a mass meeting held at Corkwoods
Folly, tlu* meeting belnj; attended by citizens
from all section* of Brunswick county.
Every citizen of the county should
carefully read and study the address, and
assist in every possible way to secure the
building of this railroad.
"It is 1(1 miles from this point to Southport.
It has taken four hours of hard
driving to come here. This distance
could be onsily c ivered in one half hour,
saving both time an I horseflesh. I use
this Itracticnl illnst mii<?.? -.louvlw
. * 'J I""
sent to your minds tint necessity of a rallroiui.
Now how can it bo done and at
what cost. KiVp'y man here is greatly i >
terested in this matter, and evciy on? can
as-i-t in securing the building.
1 propose to give you some figures on
its advantages to tlie citizens of Uruti?
wick county. We will assume that from
South port to the South Carolina State line
is 40 miles. Tli cost of grading and
making 11 its road lied would he $2,000 per
mile, or $80,000. It will take 2,010 railroad
tics to the mile, for 10 miles 105,000 tics
at80 cents each, $01,(ISO. Ilridgu timbers
vde tracks, v ater tanks, station houtu's, at
a low cVduiu'.c, $20,(h ', miikin c the magnificent
sum o $101,000, to bo distributed
among our poor people before the la} ing
of the Iron nits. Tli'.s large sum will he
in your pockets for daily us?* within
twelve mouths after the worn is begun.
Is not tills worth worl in* for? Is there
any civi/.en hose who does not desire the
good things of this life for himself and
family? I will show you how to obtain
them. We want to interest men who have
the money to build this i Ml road, and if we
can offer sulllcient inducements we can
secure such men. The most reasonable
thing and the usual way is to subscribe
county bonds, exchanging the snia bonds
for stock in the railroad, dollar for do'lw.
As the proposed railroad will benefit
Smithville, Lock woods Folly, Sh til lotto
and Waecainaw townships more directly,
it might lead to opposition from Town
Creek and Northwest townships, should
we ask for county beads.
This being ilie case 1 suggest to you the
oSer of towmhip bonds to the extent of
$6(1,000 apportioned or allotted to each
township named in propoi Jon to tlie assessors
returns as shown by the boo! s of
1894. These returns are as follows.
Smithville $402,420
T 1~
liuvivnuuus Ciiiij,.,, 125,711
8ba! lotto 144,875
Wacccmaw 103,082
Under this allotment each township
would be re(|uired to issue bonus us follows.
Smlthville, $30,0' I at 0 per cent $1,800
Lock woods Polly, $.0 000 ' 000
Bhallotte, $12,000 at 0 per cent 720
Waccamaw, $8,000 at 0 per cent 480
These bonds ahouid bo thi.ty yeu-s to
ren, at 0 per ceut interest, amounting to
$3,0000,, eacli township to pay interest on
the bonds issued by said township. In
view of the prosperity that will be sure to
follow th's rail oud building, shall wo
hesitate to pledge our; dves to this work.
Some one may nik how shall I pay this
additional ta*:, wilch to the individual
will be from 10 cents to $1.00. You can
cut and haul to the railroad one or two
cords of light.wood which will be sal: bio,
and pay the tax in that way, You, gen
tlomenHhave hundreds if not thousands of
cords of lightwood now rott'og on the
ground, practically unsalable, which would
all be wanted for cash and at fu'r prices.
The same Is true of eve*y saw log in your
forests. Near Mr. David Wa d's would
l>e a railroad station and post olticc. Here
at Lock woods Vo'ly bridge, anotiicr.
Your land would double in value, and be
salable at .Vr prices. Firms would sp-i ig
up r. 11 along'.ho 1'no, you would have a
home market for your co.ton, ooiui, potatoes,
cattle,: icep and hogs,
In conclusion let inesay this is a movement
among ourselves to encourago capitalist
to unite wltli us In opening up th's
section, so rich in natural products, and
so long neglected. Finally, note this important
fact. In our taxation tne railro ul
must bear its full snare, not only in pav
ing the interest on the bonds of the several
townships, but also the State, County
and School taxes to Illustrate, valuation of
railroad $200,00o, rate of taxation at 8
cents on the $100 gives $1,700
Let us put our shoulders to the wliee
and help along this project."

Now my dear countryman, as a oi:iz

To say that the government of our

are of the gravest importance and
must in some way present themselves

I would suggest this. Let all of

have been leading the people to no

and elect now and if possible, honest

would not class it with the things
contrary to nature? What provision
has that act made, if any, for the ed

to give them educational mors! train

stands. It is not my purpose to criticise
the intention of the Legislature,
for I believe that they meant good,
however, J contend that the method
adopted to bring about that gcod result,
is wrong. It reminds mo very
