SUMTER & SOUTHPORT R. R

1 am in receipt of a let or from
one of Southports most influential
business men, in reference to the Rail
lload outlined in the Hkkai.d of Inst
week, a part of which I quote, ho
says, ''In todays /.coder, (Southport)
I read with intense interest your letter,
whereby your rail road from Sumter
to Southport is outlined. Studying
your article by the latest map,
the whole scheme seems.feasible, and
to that end, 1 ask for further li<rht."
r->
! furnished n copy of tho charter
granted in 1892 for a road between
tho points mentioned, giving all the
information obtainable. Continuing,
ho says, "If you will cooperate with
good parties here, in pushing tho matter,
success looks certain. 1 believe
the four townships in this county
(Brunswick) to be bonolittod by the
road, would vote the bonds."
1 beliove that each county through
which this road is proposed, would
vote likewise for its construction, for
1 have never known a section to bo
injured by so doing. Mv railroad
tax is ?3 and I would gladly vote
three more to gel the road. \v o would
have an outlet to one of tho best sea
port towns on the South Atlantic
coast. Tho gentleman goes on to
say, "This road can be easily built
for ?5000 per mile, would open up a
rich and fertile country and I bolieva
from tho start, would pay its way.
I can arrange with the B. W. & S. it.
11. Co., who control a very valuable
tract of land on the Cape Kear river,
having 2800 feet of of river front and
could form a junction with that line,
say two and a half or three miles from
4 1 : l : ? ?
i>uc riYvr ia_*1111111 uis, uiey naving live
or six miles already graded towards
Wilmington."
The 15. W. \ IS. have a charter
from Wilmington to South port and
began grading in 1802, but from
some unknown cause, suspended operations
after grading as above stated.
There will bo a railroad to Southport
in the near future, then why
not have it via. Conway? i believe
if the advantages are properly kept
before the public, capitalists will be
induced to take hold of the matter.
Then lot us "get a more on," get to
work. There are lots of idle men
in our midst who could find work and
timber in abundance along the route.
This gentleman goes on to say, "and
we are ready to spend time and money
to accomplish so important an enterprise.
1 write this in behaif of myself
and several othors."
Now the ball is rolling, let us keep
it going ai.d ere long we will have
the line in actual construction and
many idlers put to work. Then we
will have more money, real estate
owners can sen enough timber lor
the building of this road to pay the
extra tax for ages to come. You
would see the country settling up
and factories starting in our towns,
that would give employment to numbers
of boys and girls. A level headed
business man, says, "If I had the
money, I would not hesitate to put
$ 100.000 in it.

ONE DOLLAR A BALE SAVED IN CLEAN
I NG THE SEED.
Wednesday afternoon Mess. 1). Me
Call and A. D. Correllof Darlington, S. O.,
and George Domain, of Hygganutn, Conn.,
gave an exhibition at Shutu'a Gin, in Monroe,
of the "Domain i'ntont Gin Kib,"
Krery gin owner knows that when the
rilis are woru (and they Iwcoine very much
worn in a few years) the ginning capacity
of the machine is very much damaged,
that i> the seeds are not cleanly picked,
nor is the lint near so good. So h?ng nsthe

cm! and thoroughly ginned. Now by the
ibc ol the Lemain Kit> a man may practically
have new ribs in ids gin all the time,
since the rib can be repaired without stopping
the machinery and at a cost almost
too trilling to mention. The test was made
in presence of the following well known
gentlemen, Mess. .J. M. Fairley, J. 11. Me
(Jann, cotton buyers; J. II. Lee, W.C. <)gburn
merchants; James Shute, glnner; T.
11. Willis, machinist; J. NV. Ashcraft, town
marshal; Mayor I. W. Stephenson, T. I).
Kemp ami others, all of whom agreed, after
the test, that the rib was everything
that was claimed for it.
The ribs were put on one of the (lullett
gins of Mr. Shute, that their complete
work might bo shown. Ucfore starting
Mr. Lemain stated clearly what he claimed
for his invention, namely: that in repairing
any gin 80 per cent could be saved by
the use of ids ribs over any other. Also
to make a better sample of lint and to clean
the seed better than could be done by a
worn ril?. And furthermore lie said that
any gin owner could renew an entire set
of ribs in fifteen minutes, and that the removal
of a rib was so simple and easily
done that the gin would not have to be
stopped in order to make the removal.
After making tlds claim Mr. Lemain
fully justified it by ginning 100 pounds of
cotton, replacing twelve ribs, without stop
ping the machinery, and in exactly eleven
minutes.
The great advantage of this rib Is thai
when a gin is fitted with them the whole
set may be repaired as often as is desired
nt a trilling cost,
Mr. Lemain left last night for Conway,
S. C., where he will make another test ol
his appliance, before he returns to Conn.
TUB TKST AT CON WAY.
FULLY SATSI FACTORY.
On the 28, Inst. Mr. Lemain, of Conn,
made a test of his Gin Rib here, Severn
gentlemen being invited to witness it viz
Mr. F. (J. Burroughs, of the firm of Bur
roughs and Collins, the largest merchant)
and cotton buyers of this section; llenrj
Hardee, proprietor of the Coranicrcla
Hotel; J, L. Do/.ier, glnner; Ralph Dozici
and the oditor of this paper.
Mr. Lemain fully substantiated evert
claim for hla invention, to the satlsfactloi
of all present. He demonstrated the man
ner of repairing, by renewing six ribs in
side of live minutes, without stopping tin
machinery, Showing that any twelve yoai
old boy could make the necessary repair;
as readily as a skilled mechanic. Tin
great saving in Hut, cleaning the seed tho
roughly, will commend itself to all gjnn
ers throughout the South and prove a bo
nun/a to the inventor as well as a great
boon to cotton growers. Mr. burroughs
was well pleased at the test made undgav<
orders at one? for enough ribs for all of hi*
gins. Tim set of ribs used here were pul
on by Mess. W. If. Howell and J. L. I)o
y.ier, who had done nothing of the kind he
fore.

Minutes of the Association of 1803.
I was not ordered to have the Minutes
printed, there being a deficiency
in the Minute fund. On Saturdayevening
after the Association adjourned,
Bro. R. I). Rest, Treasurer,
told me that the Moderator, Eld. W,
S. McCaskill and himself had decided
for Bro. J. T. Mayers, of Conway,
to do the printing, as he would
print and send them to the churches
for $18.00
Very soon I received a letter from
Bro. Mayer8, asking for the mauu
script, which I forwarded. About
six months ago Bro. Mayerp, wrote
to mo for the minute funds to pay
for the printing. I forwarded this
request to the Treasurer, asaing his
attention to the matter. 1 have received
several notifications from the
printer to forward the money and
have every time written the Treasurer,
to attend to it. Having no response
from the Treasurer, I wrote
Bro. Mayers to correspond with him
and havo not heard from ei ther
since.
Now brethren, 1 do not feel that I
am responsible for the delay, nor do
1 say that any one individual is, but
brethren do send up sufficient funds
hereafter to defray this printing of
Minutes and have no more confusion.
I loping this statement is satisfactory.
I am your Obd't Servant,
(Jko. A. Piunpk.

Our party, with a conductor to arrange

parties, trying to impress his importance

What a hcautilul sea is the Mediterranean!
Third day we pass near the l.ipari Islan Is

In loafing, reading, smoking, playing games

The llfth day was a duplicate of
