This was evidently at one time some rich

known as one of the llnost drives in the
world, along the south coast of the hay. on

road is kept in perfect condition, and as
we pass through olive and orange groves

have waited in Naples for weeks for tit

, as the sea was smooth, and we hired one
of the great number of small l:oa}s, that
came along side, to take ns in. There was
inst room for the boat to squeeze through
the entrance and the passengers had to get
i down as low as possible. Once inside
there was plenty ol room for all our boats

nymphs and fairies. The water was of the
most beautiful sky blue in appearance and

i in Italian, then French and then Fuglish,
having "picked up" a few words in all
these languages. We cannot resist their
1 persuasions to invest a few franc*, and
- bid adieu to the charming little Island and
take the boat back to Sorrento and return
over the splendid drive we made in the
> morning. The grey old cliffs scented even
grander than in the morning and a bridge
' we crossed over a great chasm, is one of
> the tlnest we ever saw and the view up the
, chasm was worth a day's drive.
Wo litid our old castle at C'astellamare
f a charming place to rest and convenient to
make daily visits to the ruins of Pompeii
from. We make walks off into the moun'
tains to see how the peasantry live and are
s objects of curiosity to them, but they can't
satisfy their curiosity by impiisitivcncss,
f as they speak no Fnglish and we no Ital

Every town of any si/.e in Italy has homo
patron saint that they honor by at least one
feast day every year. The feast day in hon
r or of ('astellamarc's patron saint was kept
} while we were there and the whole town
turned out in procession, at the head of
which was an immense banner with a pic^
ture of their saint, and all the orders of the
L) Catholic Church took prominent p.at in
f tho procession. Sunday is observed in
Italy more as a day of recreation and
amusement, than of rest. We saw from
our portico great crowds turn out on Sun
^ day to witness a balloon ascension, and our
C landlord'* best friends caino In and spent
>, the afternoon with him in his yard drink1
ing wine. Sunday evening is the time for
concerts and dances, and there is no di111 culty

s Carriage riding ischeapenough in this
part of Italy. We liireil two ono-horso
hacks for the day, which of course im lulled
drivers and their wages, for three dollars.
This old world is far ahead of
America in the <|Uallty of her roads.
They are all good. All we saw in Italy
j were macadamized and a large number of
, men are employed by the government to
;j keep them in order. Of course labor Is
cheap and abundant and if the government
, did not give employment to a great number.
we do not see how they could live.
This is our last day in Southern Italy
j and we shall not leave it without some re
. grot at not having longer time to spend
. here, for in many respects it is a most inf
foresting and charming country to visit, j
! and the winter climate is hue. We have
. more respect for Italians than when we
f came to these shores. While many of
? them, especially in Ihiutherii Italy are ig.
norant, degraded and lacking in principle
ilthe better class will nmiMrn fii%r??nilil j
r with the people of any other country. The
rent bulk of Italians we hoc in America
are of the ignorant, degraded and worst
(lass of Southern Italy, a large proportion
> being from the Island of Sicily, where a
i large part of the Italian army is required
. trying to preserve order.
