Nearly all hotels in Europe are run on
what wo rail in America the European
plan, that is, one pays a certain price for
his room and everything else is extra,
though in America there is no extra charge
for light and service in hotels conducted on
'he European plan, while over there everything
is extra. \ hotel or boarding house
that makes rates including meals, lights
and serv ice is called a "pension," pronoun
red "poticion" with the 'his" barely acccn
ted through the nose, Some of the larger
hotels in Italy will make what they call
pension" terms if desired. The night we
arrived in Home we made "pension" rates
for the family, but on receiving our bill,
having made arrangements to move to a
regular pension, we found about a dollar
a day per person charged above the price
agreed on. We nrotested nml
Hie proprictm of agreement, which In* did
not dispute, hut coolly Informed us that in
Italy the custom was when pension rates
were made, that the guest must remain at
least a week or pay in accordance with
their regular terms. We were too ncir in
Italy to dispute with him or get into any
trouble for a few dollars. We were in
formed that an American we had met in
Uenoa had died there and it had cost his
widow a large amount of money and a
groat deal of trouble and we learned it was
on account of a custom or law in Italy ami
some other European countries allowing
landlords pay for every article ol furniture
in it room where a person dies including
the carpet^nd the paper on the walls, as
owing to a certain superstition, the pro
prietor is supposed to burn everything in
the room and rc paint and re paper it.
Travellers think howevet that it is very
seldom if ever that anything is burnt and
that this custom is a great hardship and a
swindle on surviving relatives, who have
to foot tlie bills an 1 especially so where
new and elegant furniture and carpets are
charged for to replace what may have
been old and badly worn. The pensions
on the continent are patronized, principally
by Americans and English. The
>v*; meei in travelling nro about as
interesting a study as "the sights." lleforc
going to Europe we liatl an idea that
we would meet twice as many American
men as women travelling, and were astonished
to find the odds the other way
and Jour or five times as many women as
men. Wo met American and English women
in couples, triples, ipi adr uplesand
droves and an unusual proportion of widows
and maidens of doubtful age. There
was one party of nine ladies at our pension
in Home and we met them again in Naples.
They were from the Western States, and
very pleasant people to meet having travelled
considerably and being able to give
us names of desirable stopping places.
When two American ladles meet about
the following conversation always takes
place. "What State are you from?" "Cal
iforn'a." ''How long have you been over?"
"Three months.'' How long have you
been over and what line did you come by?"
"I came by the North Herman Lloyds and
have only been over thieo weeks." Then
follows the questions as to how they like
the different lines and whether this is the
first trip and what places they have visited
and they get names of /tension.* they have
stopped at and can recommend and the
terms at these boarding places, all of which
is noted down in a little book, so by the
time a lady has been travelling a month
she has a list of boarding houses that are
patronized by Americans in about every
place of note in Europe, and can write
ahead and have arrangements and terms
for board made before arrival in any town.
This saves much trouble, English speaking
landlords or "landladies" are found at all
places frequented by Americans and ser.
vants who speak English are generally
nMUHi i nice quarters of tlio boarding
places seemed to be managed or. owned l>y
women. We met a talkative Frenchman
at our pension in Homo who was an employee
of the French Embassy at Home.
He knew everything and no country was
comparable to France and no people to the
French in his opinion, lie told us France
was the only true Hepublic, and that the
English Queen was an uncultivated old woman
"who ate like a washerwoman." According
to bis judgment every one of us
who bought anything in Italy got cheated
and might have done much better and
when we talked about the splendidly
dressed men in the mansions of the
wealthy whom we were ashamed to offer
fees for little services and asked him where
to draw the line in Italy, ho told us we
need not be afraid to offer fees to anybody
in Italy except the King and Queen. Foreigners
have an idea that every American
traveller in Europe is a millionaire and
fair game to make all they can out of.
Some of the Americans we meet make us
blush for the reputation of our country.
They take occasion uncalled for to criticize
the people, the customs and t he country
in which they are travelling and to
make a disnlav of ftmlr a??
.--w - ??" ?U?
their money, if they have suddenly "come
into it." The English traveller iinpressos
one with the idea that the whole world
and the fullness thereof belongs to the
English and has an air which seems to
say "stand aside I am English." We met
some English people however who were
affable, cultivated, agreeable and companionable.
When an Italian or German enters
a cur he bows and lifts bis hat and
when ho leaves he politely bids good day
to all in the car. Mark Twain says if a man
comes into the car and does not do this
you may safely speak to him in your native
tongue, if you are an American or
English.

Deah Sius?1 wish to give my
testimonial in regard to your valuable
medicine, 1\ I'. I'., for the euro
of rheumatism neuralgia, dyspepsia,
biliousness, cl". In 1901 I was attueted
with bilious muscular rhett
matism, and have been a martyr to it
ever since. 1 tried a 11 medicines 1
ever heard of, and all the doctors in
reach, but I found only temporary
relief; the pains were so bad at times
that 1 did not care whether 1 lived
or died. My digestion lit camo so
impaired that everything 1 ate disagreed
with me. My wife also suffered
so intensely wit It dyspepsia
that her lift; was a burden to her;
she would ho confined to her bed for
weeks at the time; she also suffered
greatly from giddiness and loss of
sleep. Some time in March I was
advised to take l\ 1'. I\, and before
we (my wife and I) had finished the
second bottle of I\ I'. P., our digestion
began to improve. My pains
subsided so much that 1 have been

a number of years. Wo will con
