Novelties in Laities' Skirt*.
For (juite a long time fashions have
undergone a slow change, practically
remaining in a stationary state with
slight modification. This season, how
ever, a decided change is shown in
skirt*, in the way of draperies. The
old-time draped effects are more or!
less revive*! with the addition of,!
I many pretty and artistic touches, in
accordance with modern taste, or
i with adaptations from hist ?rica! sour- jt
| ces. The underskirt, however, will |
retain its present 11 * ring effect. To
j many people, the announcement of I
this coming style is viewed with
some apprehension, as it implies i
much prutical knowledge for the <
I making up of the new -kir's. The
' best way, however to find the needed
information and all the leading;
l models of the coming season, is to I
'subscribe to one or two Fashion
.Journals. The Mi Dowell Magazities,
which always maintain a high
I d* gree of excellence in this respect,
will perfectly fill the wants of everyone
on this subject. We notice also
tlui*, for the further accommodation
of their customers, these .Magazines
contain, in the form of coupons, at
an exceedingly moderate price, designs
of new skirts and other most
novel styles. The patterns and
paper models issued by the house of
Me Dowell & Co., are widely known
and justly praised for their accuracy,
and their artistic, as well as practical
excellence. "I/i Mode de Paris"
and "Paris Album of Fashion" cost
only *3.50 a year or 35 cents each
per copy. "The French Dressmaker"
is $3.00 per Annum or 30 cents
a copy, "La Mode," which is the
best family fusion Magizine in existence,
is off* red to subscribers at the
exceedingly low price of !<1.50 a year
or 15 cents a copy. If you are unable
to procure any of these publications
from your news dealer do
not take a substitute from him but

Negroes to Meet.
New YokW, Feb. 2?.?A Times
special from Hirmingham, Ala., says: |
Itev. A. J. Warner, '.he leading color
ed divine in this state, and other re !
presentative negroes have called a
convention of their race for March!
21 in tins city. The convention is
called in accordance with the resulu.
tioi s of the National Colored con
vention held in Cincinnatti last No- ,
vein her.
The object is to discuss, generally,
the emigration of the race t<> Africa.
The men who issued tho call stand
with Bishop Turner, who says Africa
is ti e nu ttral home of the negroes,
and the sooner they return there the!
better.
General interest in the *ul>j *ct
has been aroused in this state recently.
and something practical is expec
ted from convention, although
the recent colored conference at Tus? j
ke^ee decided contrary to the
scheme of Bishop Turner.
Kxpcrlmmt With Cow*.
At Purdue University experiment*
made from January to March, 1893,
with three cows kept In the burn and
three exposed all night, all being
fed id ike, showed that the cows ex
posed to the weather during the day
ate more food than those given shelter
in the barn; they lost in weight,
while the sheltered cows gained, us
well as gave less milk, there being a
difference of $13 in favor of giving
the cows shelter. The University
director had Urge posters printed
containing the results, which were
placed in prominent places for the
observation of farmers. The exposed
cows were sheltered at night,
while the sheltered cows wore allowed
outside for an hour on pleasant
days. Shelter is a cheap mode of
s?viug food.
