tiling mostly needed by us at present.
In assuming the Editorial manrgeni'Mit
of this paper I am returning to
my first love. A third of a century
ago I laid aside the implements of a
printer's boy and donned the garb of
a soldier, following "The Tattered
Banner' through four years of victory
and disaster. Since then my attention
has been wholly given to mercantile
pursuits. I am aware that grave
responsibilities are before me, but I
take up the task with the determination
that all of my energies shall he
used in endeavoring to give the patrons
of the paper value received.
The policy of the paper will he
truly democratic, or as much so as we
shall lie able to make it. Wo are not
disposed to malign and constantly nag
at those who differ with us, hut will
endeavor in the best manner to keep
tlx; tone and temper of the Herald in
the ranks of lir.-t class journalism. I
We shall make mistakes. Who does
not: We shall commend and uphold
whatever is right, as well condemn
what we believe to ho wrong. We
enter this Held with some distrust in
our capabilities, but with an abiding
faith in the people of Ilorry, with
whom wo have li\ed so many years,
whose support and encouragement we
beg on assuming these r sponsibili
ties. If you will come forward im
mediately and render the assistance
noeded, you will enable us to give
you a paper that will meet your endorsement.
Now let every one who
roads these lines respond and we will
try a:.d carry out our part of the contract.

will find no place in those columns.
We have our distinctive convictions
and we shall at times use thorn in the
best ?p:rit possible. Prohibition in
sentiment, we will endeavor by ini'd
means to disseminate a moral inlluence

In a sermon preached at Atlanta,
Ga., last Sunday, Dr. Hawthorne,
the brilliant pastor of the first Baptist
Church, said on the subject,

liquor shops, in dry counties and

tive minions, called Constables, who
are armed at the expense of the Stat"

nor to down anyone that interferes
with them in the divdiarge of their

Stute, as it is a step toward prohibi

the State pledged to their support, he
conducive to temperance, prohition,
i higher standard of morals or Obris
tiaii character?
