New Business Men.?There have
been several new mercantile businesses
started in this county this
season. Cuibraith Bros, at Green
Sea, lately from Marion, have set up
a stock of goods before the people of
that section. Mr. I.arkin F. Hughe?,
at I't. Ilarrelson, has rented out his
farm and is doing a general mer
chandise, lumber and shingle business.
Geo. VV. Sessions & Bro. have
Combined stock and are catering for

These things and ot'neis, we may

HORRY'S BOARD OF CONTROL.
Its Porsouuel?Further Dev* lopiiioiitson
the Dispenser y Question
-Petitions.
If the good people of Couway get
any news on local political develop?monts,
they must go front home to
do so. Nobody in Conway and pos
sibly only a few in the county knew
who was to compose our county
board of Control until the daily papers
from Columbia gave their names.
iSaturda/ evening's Journal su\t>:
* w
"At the request of four petitions
from llorry county u county board of
control litis been established consisting
of C. ??. Prince, (J. C. Butler
and J. 1). Oliver. That number of
dispcnsarits will be es'-ublished in the
county til though there are no incor
poruted towns in the county." "Four
petitions" sounds large and round;
but strange to sty no petitions for
the appointment of a hoard of control
has been heard of in town. Pe
titions were out and have been for
Some time, being signed by those in
favor of a dispensary in llorry and
calling for an election; but our iu
formation goes that these have been
withdrawn and will not be used as
there is no necessity for the calling
of an election to get a dispensary es
tablished. It is hardly probab'e
that they were used to get a board of j
control appointed.
This Hoard of Control, it will be
noticed are all from the country. Mr.
Prince lixes in upper Bayboro on the
Lake Swamp; Mr. Butler near Farmers,
in Simpson Creek; Mr. Oliver
in upper Bucks. I'tie county seat,
contrary to expectations, has no representative.
Whether thin nlwuvn
thai Comvay w:ll not he considered
us ft site for u dispensary \vc cannot,
of course, even infer. The board is
pretty well distributed on the west
side of the Waecamow?the east
side is not represented ftt all.
From developments hither and
yon it appears tliut considerable
and quiet work is going on to elTect
the estftbiishtnent of dispensaries in
this county. Whcse "line Italian
band'' collects the inlluences and
controlls tlioir direction no one seems
able to say; "It's 'the people,' reaching
out for their legal rights," wo are
told. A robust rumor that comes
from non Conservative sources tells
of anathemas hurled at Burroughs
School which stands in quiet but
unyielding defense of Conway?tells
of remarks that intimate the establishment
of a dispensary in Conway,
law or no law. But it is probably
all rumor and bad humor. We give
it for what it's worth. We must remember
thit rumors aro live things
among non-reading people.
Here's another paper. The Col
umbia correspondent of the jVt'irs
and Cuuricr writes: "It now looks
us if even Horry County, which lies
for a generation been exempt from
the liquor traffic, is to have an array
of dispensary establishments. No j
election will have to be held in that
county as it has been found that the
only reason bar rooms were not allowed
there was because of the fact
that there were 110 incorporated j
to was in thi county. Governor j
1111 id 1111 10 uay selected tne memoers
of the board of control for that county
and ad vised Senator Derham that
as many as four dispensaries mi^lit
be established if there was a demand
for that many and they would be
found to be profitable. This will
leave Oconee, Pickens and Marlboro
alone in their ^lory as prohibition
counties."
