SAM HorSTON'S M A URIAH K
A Story That Comes from tin*
Cousin of a Deserted UndoA
Terrell, Texas, letter to tlio
St. Louis Hopuhlic says: The mystery
which lias hitherto hung iihout
the (irst marriage ami the separation
of tlen. Sam Houston, the great
warrior statesman, is entirely removed
by the following story related
to the Republic correspondent
by the Rev. W. I>, Owen, a Presbyterian
minister, who is here as
the guest of a brother minister, having
a few days ago arrived from* his
home in Arcadia, La. Mr. Owen
in,. r T ?
woiuvu in iiiv; niiuf i?i i CIHIUSIBUU
for innnv years, and during his
resilience there formed the acquaintance
of a Mrs. Williams a cousin
of Miss Allen, the young lady, lionston
married.
A strong feeling of affection existed
between the two cousins, and
Mrs. Williams, who was a parishoner
of Mr. Owen, one day related to
him the story of her marriage and
separation substantially as related to
her by Miss Allen. Today Mr.
Owen told the story to your correspondent
as it was related to him.
It was substantially as follows;
Previous to her engagement and
marriage with Houston, Miss Allen
was ardently loved by u young jnun
of the neighborhood, whose name
Mr. Owen has forgotten. Ho was a
deserving young fellow, with bright
prospects before hi in, but was poor
in so far as this world's goods wore
concerned. He sought Miss Alien s
hand in marriage and was aeeeuieil
rj ~ I
The marriage would in all probability
have taken place but for the
strenuous objections interposed by
the young lady's parents. Houston
had already paid Miss ,Allcn some
attention, which she reciprocated in
a courteous manner, be being a man
of great prominence. Willi these
considerations, together with the
preference of her parents, who opposed
her own choice, Miss Allen
renounced her former lover and accepted
Houston's offer of manage.
The day was set for the marriage
and all arrangements wore made for
the event. The wedding occurred
at the residence of the bride's par
ntsin the presence of a few invited,
guests, immediate friends and relatives
of the contracting parties.
Among those invited was tho young
man whom Miss Allen had discarded,
lie entered the room as tho marriage
cermony was being conclndedo
just as the jewelled hand of the
bride was extended and grasped by
Houston. Houston noted Iter agi
tation, but said nothing until after
congratulations had been extended
and the marriage feast finished.
When all these festivites were
over and the bride and groom repaired
to their room together Houston
gave way to his agitation <>f
mind and bluntly demanded of iii<
bride why she paled and trembled
during the performance of the nuptial
ri'.es. His wife hurst into tears
atul refused to make answer, lie
insisting, stating that it was his right
to know. Aaguin she declined, and
the time weeping bitterly. A third
time Houston demanded an answer
to his question*, and finally bis wife,
iiuiiu tears, ioiu linn that she would
make reply to his questions in regard
to the matter if he would lision
to her explanation after all had
been told. This condition was
agreed to. Houston began lirst by
asking Mrs. Huston if she did not
love another before i-ho met him.
Her reply was that she did. His
next question was:
<uDo you now love him more than
you do your husband?'"
To this vital question Airs. Houston
replied, <kl do."
Then," said Houston, "1 will
release you from the obligations
you have just made."
And with this blunt speech
he left his wife, she all the while
beseeching him, amid blinding tears
to wait and listen to her explanation.
Hut he would not, and left
her before the evening fell upon
that, to her, woeful day.
Of course Houston's action wtis
inexplicicaple and threw the household,
the community and the State
into the deepest consternation. What
he suffered by this stop muse he
left to the imagination The pen
cannot describe it. Kvery shaft of
malice and abuse was turned acminst
o
him until, life becoming intolerable,
he resigned the Governorship betook
himself to the sylvan shades of the
Cberokees on the borderland* of
Tennessee and M ississippi, the chief
of whom was his warmest friend.
While on a mission to Washington,
in later years Houston passed through
Nashville, his former homo. Though
attired very much in tho manner of
an Indian, his face so bronzed from
exposure and heat as to remove almost
every trace of his former likeness,
he was yet recognized by an
old time friend, of whom he asked a
few questions about Mrs. Houston.
The friend told him bow, immediately
after the separation, she bad
assumed the mourner's garb and re
tired to a secluded spot in Nashville,
where she had since lived in absolute
retirement, almost .he life of a ro
close. It is said that Houston was
deeply moved by his friend's recital,
and regretted he hud acted so harsh
ly. He would not listen to his
friend's entreaties, however, to return,
but continued his journey to
Washington, without further making
; his indentity known in Nashville.
