Tlio Story of Three Spies.
Whatever may bo their failures
there is very little doubt that the
whiskev constabulary who are on doty
are aoing their level best to earn
the twice thirty pieces of sitrer which
the Slate promises to pay them for
betraying their fellow citizens, Hero
is a story of a constabulary exploit,
savs the X<trs <ni'/ ('onrier, which
is vouched for and which shows how
hard these ollicials are trying to work
up cases:
A citizen \s ho has a grocery
store in the citv was called upon by
a little negro boy an evening or two
ago. The hoy asked for a twenl\
live cents flask of whiskey just as
naturally as if there was no such
tiling as a Dispensary in the* town.
Around the corner grouped together
in the gloaming were tit roe whiskey
spies. They hud hired the hoy t<>
buy the whiskey from the citizen
so as to make ease against the oiti
/.on. Another citizen who was not
in the grocery business, however, laid
overheard the conspiracy and had
given the whole snap away to the
citizen who kept the grocery.
So when the small boy asked for
the twenty five cents llask of whis
Key the citizen did not say him nay,
but forthwith proceeded to till u
flask with strong cistern water
with a good bead on it and handed
it to the small b >y, who thereupon
took it out to the three whiskey
spies.
For a moment, so the story goes,
the air in the vicinity of that grocery
was sulphuric with profanity. Then
there was a sudden streak through
the gloaming and the three spies
slunk away, their skins filled with
wrinkles.
