The Advertiser fully reali/.es the unnatural conditions which clog any attempts on its part to discuss public questions 'villi 'the farmers of the country. Tf they had been drilled only to disbelieve the editorial utterances of what Reform papers arc pleased to gratuitously stigmatize as the "subsidized press"' we should not bo inclined to protest. Wo have abundant faith in the strength and power of our political views to convince if they can be accorded a fair hom ing. We do con fess, however, and it with mortification, that a very large and important element of the masses has been per sanded to ignore and shut their oyos to anything that unTillmanistio papers may say, and we among them aro so cut olT from frank and candid argument with the very persons , with whom it is our earnest desire to speak. It is not only deplorable hut re markablo that two-thirdf of the white people of the State seriously suspect the honesty of all the Anti Tillman papers published; and this in the face of the fact that every Anti Tillman paper is daily losing dollars by its political course. It is in the face of the further fact that * i,...... ...... 11 i nn.ll- ?II*J liut llllll I- lllilll I l? In order to suggest some lines upon which good advise is noeded, the Junior Kditor asks thaf the following be specially noted by his many advisers: Kditing a newspaper is a pleasant j business?if you can stand it, says St. Augustine News. If it contains many advertisements subscribers complain that they take up too much space. If there is a lack of advertising it is unpopular and the people won't take it. If wo attend church regularly they say we go for effect. If we stay away from church they : say we are monstrously heathenish. If wo accept an invitation to a wedding they say we are to "write it up." If wo go to the opera house they say we go on free tickets. If we are seen on the streets too often they say we neglect our business If wo avoid rrmnnr i\i\ 1 1\r* cf rnot l?mr o.? *r .... V..-^ UV.V.W. HiV j O.IJ ?< don't hustle around for thenews. If we publish a lengthy communication our i readers will say wo lack discretion ( and put in anything to "fill up*" If wc swell out in a new suit of clothes and celobrato ground hog day they say we got our clothes in payment for advertising, ami that wo are. by far too foppish. If, in our frailty, we sometimes perpetrate a joke or' make a stagger at a poor little pun, they say we are exceedingly light and won't do. If we omit the jokes they say we are poor, miserable fos sils. If we are married they say it. is a pity of our wives. If wo are not married they say it is because wo arc too homely to get. a wife. If we publish a man who has brought disgrace upon his family, the friends of the family never forget us. If we, out of goodness of heart, decline! to say anything on the subject, tho man's enemies are disappointed and we are branded as a white-livered coward. We are able to stand these raps and many more and are til ways ready to receive vis'tors, whether accompanied by a d"g or 10I.
