The report of the Closing proceedings
of tho Court of General Sessions
for Berkeley County, which was published
yesterday, stated that seven
colored men had been convicted of
homicide during the week, and that
six of their number had been sen ten
cod to l>e hanged for their crimes on
September 1. All these homicides,
it will be noted, were committed in ;
the country district just beyond the;
limits of the City of Charleston,
which has been the scene of so many
similar crimes in recent years. It is
a bad record, and it grows worse
every year.
Is it not high time, indeed, for the

regulations for the "Bloody Boll" in

can live and work in it, and go about
in it, without ferr of their livesf
Tne record of seven men convicted
at one term of the Court for murders
in that small territory ought to compel
attention to conditions there, if
it. does not. It is a state of affairs
that has no parallel, we believe, in
this country. Howe ill we tolerate
it as we do, without lifting a hand to
change it?

at 10 o'clock, ami his death is a loss
deeply felt and sincerely nioumod by
all. Although he lingered two days,
sustained by his unusual vitality, l.is
condition has been unchanged front i
the first. Unconscious and without
suffering he lay until the last earthly
moments were ended and his spirit
was ushered into the other world.
1 )r. Alexander was for live years
the pastor of the Baptist Church
here prior to his occupancy of the
chair of mental and moral philosophy
in the South Carolina College. His
public career is well known throughout
our State and beyond its borders,
and hero, as elsewhere, lie was beloved
and honored. His charactor was
singularly strong and puro, and the
life purposes that inflexibly nnimn
ted his every action made a man of
rare moral symmetry and worth. lie
was a lover of truth and light, and
liis life exemplified in its smallest
details these ennobling virtues.
That ho was cutoff in the midst
of his years, with life before him,j
only adds to the sadness and grief j
folt at the closing of a career of such
worth and with the promise of such
largo and noble fruition.
The interment was at the Baptist
Cemotery this afternoon, a pouring
rain not keeping away the large
number of friends assembled to pay
tins last mark of respect. Business
was suspended as the casket, literally
covered with floral offerings, bore its
burden to its last resting place.

Alexander expressed a desire for the
simplest and most informal funeral
ceremonies. In accordance with this |
expressed wish and also at the special
request of the family, Mr. henry
T. Thompson read portions of the
Episcopal burial service. In the enforced
absence of a friend who loved
the dead man as a brother, Mr.
Thompson, at the request of this
friend, read this selection as a suitable
epitaph;
"His life was gentle, and the elements
so mixed in him that nature
might stand up and say to all the
world, 'This was a man."
Dr. Alexander leaves and three
children, and with them the community
shares with deepest sympathy
the sense of bereavement and loss !
that all too soon comes from this sail
and untimely death.
