The Rev. Dr. .J. T. Pluntkett delivered
the annual oration on tho subject,

days at Converse are alwevs coinci
dent with red-letter days in Spartanburg
and this was no exception. The
chapel-was crowded not only to
welcome tho fair graduates into the

Charleston delivered the literary address

Cleveland And Butler Confer
About South Carolina AffairsThe

?Senator Butler and President
Cleveland had it long interview today
on South Carolina affairs,, and,
as far as possible, they reached some
determination of hoAlincr tlio
al breach in that State. It was an
interview by appointment, and will
result in much good to the Palmetto
State. ft
The President and the Senator aro
in perfect accord. The President
manifested great anxiety to have the
Democratic ranks united, so as to
present an unbroken front to all opposition.
He said that lie would
contribute everything in his power
to bring about such a result.
The Senator mentioned the fact
that the Republican District Attorney
had resigned, but no successor
was fixed upon Senator Sutler gave
the President, a list applicants for
the attorneyship and marshalship,
and referred him to the endorsements
on file. The appointments now will
soon ho made, and President Cleve
land will also soon give some diplomatic
and consular appointments to
South Carolina.
Senator Butler will go to New
Vork tomorrow and return Friday.
Representative Brawley is ex^ec*
ted in the city Friday evening.

Territory, as they are ttaveling
in that direction. * *

a skirmish between the sheriff's posse
and the robbers took place about
four miles west of Bentonville, but
gives no particulars^
