How To Kill Hawks.
In reply to M. B. S., of (inffnev
City ?>f, S. C., as t<> th.' fatality of
hawks eat in j*1 chicken', that have
been fed on nu\ vonira, I will say
from experience it is not, but the
following, if strictly and carefully
followed, will kill luiwks without
fail, and if persisted \yill evterni nate
tliem from almost any continuity.
Hawks almost al\va>s cat the brains
of their prey first. Now shut up al 1
the chickens, except the brood most
likely to be attacked h) tlm hawks,
take crystal)zed strychnine (don't
use the powdered, as it is very often
worthless), pulverize it, add honey or
molasses enough to make a paste,
add a little soot or lamp-black to
make the part dark, to prevent the
chickens from eatintr it off of each
other.
For each chicken take as much
of the paste us you can hold on tho
point of a pen-knife, put it on the
top of the head, down well into the
feathers. Turn the chickens out
where the hawks can get them, and
you will kill a hawk for every (.'hicken
lost. < )n several occasions I have
found the hawk dead with the chick
> cu in his claw, having only finished
his favorite mor scl, tho brains. One!
application is good for a week or
more, if not washed oil by rain or
heavy dew. Bear in mind, strychnine
is a deadly poison.

Our Dwindling Gold Supply.

January 1 sixty million dollars of
gold have boon exported to Europe,
and the export movement instead of
having abated, scents to have received
fresh impetus. Most of this gold wat
taken from the I nited States treasu
ry, and practically all that is now
being exported comes from the same
source. In that time the treasury
has sustained a net loss of $25,5154,
143 the net total gold in treasury on
January 1, 18051, having been $121,
200,002, while today it is only $95,
1)12,419.
Advices from New York show that
with the fifold. omraured for shinment

on Tuesday and Wednesday, 3,200,000,
the total net gold remaining in
in the treasury will bo about *93,000,000,
the lowest figure reached
since the resumption of specie pay/
mcntg. In addition to this large
engagement there are reports current
here. from sources usually well
founded, that more gold will go out
on next Saturday, sufficient, it is
said, to reduce the gold holdings
to $29,000,000.
A Railroad Horror.
Tvuoni:, Pa, May 30.?This morning
a special train on the Tyrone and
.Clearfield Kailroad, composed of
Walter Main's circus cars, got beyond
control of the trainmen and came
down the mountain with fearful rapidity.
At Vail station the train was
wrecked. Animals, men and broken
ears were piled up together. Several
tigers end lions made their escape,
and only after the greater exertions
were they recaptured, and then not
until one of the tigers had killed
several domestic animals in the
neighborhood. Six men killod out
right and twelve or fourteen others
badly wounded, some of them fatally.

and fought the police. Twedty
arrests have been made.
