Bank Failures in the West
Indian-atoms, Ind, May 11.?
The Capital National Hank of this
city has suspended. The statement
18 mado that the closing of the hank's
doors was made necessary by the
failure of the Chemical National
Bank of Chicago last week, which
institution owed the Capital Hank
$100,000. The capital Hank also
carried a Iurare amount of th? l'roni.
ier Steel Works' paper. The latter
concern was placed in the hands of
a receiver on Friday last.
The bank opened as usual at A.
M., but it was simply opened l ending
an attempt with the assistance
of other banks to meet a run on it
from depositors. The Capital Hank
was not a member of tHe Clearing
House Association and lias been at
war with it. \\ hen the other banks
were asked for assistance they mot
and declined to render any. The
doors of the Capital were then closed
by order of the directors. The
first public intimation of the failure
was the placard posted in the window,
ami the excitement for a time was intense.
A number of people withdrew
their deposits from other banks.
The Hank of Commerce had quite a
run. It is controlled by the Depaus
who \sv ro the controllers of the I'render
Steel Works, now in tlie hands
of a receiver. Some of the paper of
the steel company was held by the
Capital Hank. The Hank of Commerce
was prepared for all emergen
cies and confidence was soon.restor
ed.

xiioucuiui iiiiuiutios ot the Capital
Hank are nbonl $1,050,000. The
paid up capital stock is $300,000 and
the assets are estimated at $250,000.
M. 11. Wilson was president and
Charles H Doherty cashier. The
failure may endanger the solvency of
banks at Vincennes, Sullivan and
Gas City, in which Wilson, Doherty
and others arc large stockholders,
and between which and the Capital
Hank intimate relations existed.
Tho comptroller of the currency has
telegraphed that a special agent is
on his wayt o take charge of the bank.
It is believed that the Capital Hank
will pay one hundred cents on tlu
dollar.
Another Chicago Bank FailsCiik
ac.o, May 11,?The Colum bia
National Bank of this city has
failed.
In the report of the bank's coiuli
tion made by its olliccrs at the close
of business on May 4- the deposits
wore stated to he nearly a half j
lion dollars. Capital stock of
?^ one million. The failure
^ was duo to tho unprecedented withdrawals
o. deposits during the past
two weeks, umaunting to nearly half
a million dollars. Yesterday a demand
for $100,000 was made by a
customer, and Hie demand was met,
but it so impaired the condition of
the bank that it was decided to seek
tho aid of other institutions to-day.
This was done this morning, but
rival banks were not inclined to give
temporary assistance till an examination
of the bank's affairs hail beon
made. At 11 o'clock it was decided
to announce the failure of the institution,
and a notice to his effect was
posted on the doors.

'V Simple Itcincdy tor- Cholera.
Dr. llenry C. Cooper swears by
this remedy for cholera: One ounce
of camphor should be dissolved in
six ounces of spirts of wine, and a
small bottle should be given to any
inttelligent person who will undertake
to administer it to his poor
neighbors when they are seized with
cholera or any of its symptoms. Tho
following instructions should be
carried out tit the same tnno with
the utmost care and attention to detail:
On the appearance of any cholera
symytoms, such as vomiting, pur
gmg, sudden weakness, coldness,
cramps or spasms, instead of administering
brandy, whisky or any other
kind of medicine put the patieu' to
bed instantly, covering him warinlv
but not overloading him with bed
clothes. Then, without a moment's
unnecessary delay, administer (for an
adult) two drops (not more) of the
camphor mixture on a little pounded
sugar in a spoonful of cold or ice I
water.
Five minutes aftor let him take a
second close of two drops in the
same way, and in live minutes more
a third close. He can then wait ten
or fifteen minutes to see whether or
not there is a sense of returning
warmth, with a disposition toward
perspiration, and manifest decrease
of sickness, cramps, etc If the improvement
is not satisfactory two
drops more of the mixture must be
taken, as before, and the close must
be repeated every live minutes until
four-teen drops have been taken.
In administering the remedy par
ticuhir caution must be observed
that patient be not allowed to
take anything of that sort or kind
while the medicine is operating, or
its effect will be destroyed, for the
least foreign medicine neutralizes
the camphor, which is given to check
vomiting and to produce a free warm
perspiration*?Pittsburg I >ispatch.
