Gov. Tillman claims now to bo
well up in his knowledge of whiskey,
but unfortunately for South Carolina
ho is not so well informed on
law. There>Ss a limit to a man's
powers and capacity and it is not
reasonable to expect him to acquiro
such stores of knowledge about the
methods of manufacturing whiskey
and othor intoxicants and at the 1
same time manage important lawsuits
in the United States Courts.
We deferentially suggest that, if 1
the Governor proposes to manage the
whiskey Departinont of the State
government that he leave the law '
Department to be managed by lawvers.

Something that probably has nev- >

bit rapidly. This time it was a ,
'Hypnotic Exhibition," instead of j
seeing the monkey dance. Mess, i
S. T. Clyde and Hugh Mc Lucas, of '
Marion, were the hypnotizers. On !
Friday night the subjects were all j
young and Mr. Clyde succeeded in i
getting a subject in right condition
to perform with, so the exhibition '
was very satisfactory on Friday night.
Saturday nijVht he proposed to have
another exhibition and have old I
men for subjects, which he said would I
be better to perform with and more i
interesting, but the audience were I
much disappointed, not only by his <
not being able to seoure an older i
subject, but having to use the same ]
subject he used on Friday night. I
The exhibition would have been a \

At the lust meeting of the Knights
of Honor the idea of having an ex
cursion lor the benefit of the order
was discussed. It is not fully decided
as to whether the trip will be
by rail to Wilmington, N. C. or bv
steamer to some point on the bountiful
water of our Waccamaw. At
uny rate the Knights' excursion is
an assured fact. Let every one
prepare for the i/rand ''jollification"
about the 15th of May,
There is some talk of holding an
indignation meeting in Columbia to
condemn and denounce Gov. Tillman
for sending .John lYterson to
Denmark. Now, wo do not hesitate
to unqualifiedly condemn such action
on the part of the citizens of Columbia.
Let each man ask himself, what
would lie have done in Gov. Till ..an's
place under similar circumstances? j
Did Gov. Tillman have any reason to
suspect a lynching of the innocent at
Denmark? Ifhedid, he is the more
blumable for sending Peterson without
ample protection. Put the crowd
had discharged so many whose innooense
wes proven, that it was natural
for him to suppose they would act the
same way towards Paterson.
o
The decision of tue U. S. Supreme
Court is adverse to (lie State in the
celebrated railroad cases. The Governor
promised, as we remember, that
the sheriffs should be held harmless
whatever the decision of the Court,
which will require hint to pay their
lines, besides the expenses of litigation
and lawyers' fees. lie paid
Judge Tucker, of Virginia $2000.;
then he must compensate Speaker
Jones and Mr. Lord, of Charleston.
After the decision by Judges Go?f
and Siinonton, Mr. Lord dropped ou^
of the case for what cause we are
not delininetly informed, but it is
generally supposed that ho saw no
sufficient ground for an appeal to
the Supremo Court. Speaker .Jones
and the Attorney General entertained
doubt of the propriety of the
appeal. The ablest constitutional
lawyer perhaps iu the South was
called to their assistance, so that the
case on the State's part was ably
presented and argued before the

new counsol, but confident in the
justice of thoir case left its management
to their regular attorneys. The
experiment has been rather a costly
0110 to the people, only to gratify the
animosity and prejudice of the chief
Executive of the State.
We publish this week Gov. Tillman's
reasons for requesting President
Cleveland not to appoint M.
I a Donaldson to any office at home
or abroad. The Governor certainly
exhibits considerable temerity in
black-listing Mr. Donaldson for
supporting Mr. Cleveland for the
presidential nomination at Chicago.
Ask a man to repudiate a friend
under great difficulties! Would Gov.
Tillman do it at the roquest of any
man? Would he not rather regard
it as a case demanding reward for
friendship and support under adverse
circumstances and in the face of
positive instructions.' l lie Cleveland
Democrats in tho Alliance will
evidently support Donaldson in this
contest, while the Third Party element
will naturally think Tillman
did right, ftone of the reasons appear
to us substantial, or of sufllcient
force to disqualify a man for holding
any official position whoso duties he
was otherwise capable of discharging.
A great hue out cry Inn been mado
about the black-listing of certain
3ongre8smen because they were
masquerading under false colors,
alaiming to be Democrats when
they had assisted in repudiating the
greatest living Democrat and refused
to endorse the national platform on
which he stood and stands, and now, 1
the leader of the ogposition blacklists
Donaldson in part, because he
favored this Democrat and endorsed
the national Democratic platform!
Verily, we have fallen upon anomalous
times.
The act'on of the Charleston Prosi
bytery in sustaining the 2nd Presbyterian
church in Columbia for dis- i
missing Miss Sadie Means because
her duties required a few hours work \
)n Sunday has produced extensive
id verse comment by the secular |
press. The strongest objectionable
feature that we see in the case is 1
that the ohyrch overlooked certain 1
men whose vocations required cer- ,
:ain work on Sunday and disciplined j
this poor orphan girl who is de
peudent upon her daily exertions for
a livelihood. The statement of the
pastor indicates that these men were
received into the church hy special
dispensations with the privilege of
continuing their Sabbath violations
and cannot now be descoptlned without
breaking the covenant made
with thorn. We are free to admit
that our notions of Sundry observance
is very lax, in fact the observance
of all the commandments, is
growing superficial and perfunctory.
All the commandments have been
ratified in blood, ami the Fourth is
as sacred and binding as the Sixth.
God showed llis idea oft lie sanctity of
the day when He ordered a man
slain for gathering sticks on that day.
The Sabbath was made for man but
not for man to violate and desecrate,
but for rest, contemplation and en
largement of soul and development
of the spiritual graces. The religion
of Jesus Christ is straight laced, and
only those who outer the strait
gate and walk in the narrow way
ever find it. If any case ever appealed
to the chivelry and manhood
of an oecle.iistical body the case of
Miss Means should. If it was wrong
for Miss Means to work on Sunday
it was certainly so for the men, and
no special covenant could exempt
them. Accepting the position of
manager of the Telephone Kxchango
her duties required her attendance
from A, M. to 1 T. M. though
nothing was usually done. She was
offered other positions, but the offers
seemed to be by grace, and not
because the parties wanted or needed
her services, and Miss Means very
properly declined. The case will
probably be appealed to the Synod
ami we ahull watch for the Synod's
action with interest.
Hypnotism.
('onway was agreeably entertained
last Friday and Saturday nights by
performances in hypnotism by S. T.
Clyde and Hugh Mcl.ucas. The performance
on Friday night was held
at the school house, where between
50 and 75 people assembled. A call
being made for subjects between 8
and 10, young men of Conway responded.
The purpose of calling
so many was to find an easy subject
to handle. Mr. Clyde selected Hope
Burroughs and tho performance began.
lie told him to hold out his arm
and when this had grown rigid, he
told him he couldn't put it down to
save his life. His arm trembled,
but did not como down until he
took the "spell" off. lie next held
up a stick, and told him it was an
enemy of his, to strike it. Hope

get no further. "Now your hand
can go to here, and no further,'' said
Mr. Clyde, holding his hand about
six inches on one side of the stick.
Sure enough. The stick was next a
snake from which the subject lied
with fright plainly depicted on his
countenance. Next it was a pretty
girl which the subject saluted when
told to with two good smacks.
Performer and subject next took a
baloon trip to the celestial regions,
arriving there safe and sound, Mr.
Clyde asked Hope what he saw. "I
soe an old gray-headed man, and a
big stone wall surrounding a city."
"Isn't this a fine looking country?"
"No;" I'd rather be in Conway."
"Well," said Mr. Clyde, "I'm going
to that old man and pay my way in,
Ilavo yon got fifty cents?'' "No!'
"Well, what are you going to do?"
"Ibn going home!" How are you
going to get there? The baloon belongs
to me, and I'm going in that,
and there's only room enough for
one." "I'll jump off." Hope was
finally left on the island of heaven,
without money enough to get in,
aootu to cry.
He next made him hot and cold
at will, and warm himself hy a stool,
and cooling himself by taking off
his coat, and when he went to put it
on, made him turn it wrong side out
thinking it was right.
Making his body perfectly rigid,
ho laid his head on one and his feet
on another stool, and ho remained
in that position, not bonding at all.
With a few other performances the
meeting closed.
Saturday night performances were
held at the Court house, tic could
not find a suitable subject, so he solicited
the one he had Friday
night.

same order as the night before.
Drawing an imaginary horse and buggy,
and paddling an imaginary canoe,
both of which he turned over, the last

first one breaking his log.
Hypnotism is defined by Webster
as follows; "A form of sleep or
somnambulism brought on by artifi- i
Dial means, in which there is an unusual
suspension of some powers (
uul an unusual activity of others. {
It is induced by an action upon the
nerves, through the medium of j
the sen808, as in persons of very
feeble organization, by gazing
steadily at a very bright object
held up before the eyes, or by pressure
upon certain parts of the body."
This last was the method used by
Mess. Clyde and MeLucas. The
point was to concentrate tho mind
and they solved it by making the
subject count his pulse.

Washington. April 24.?The '
South Carolina lax cases were passed
upon by the Supremo Court of the
United States today, the opinion
being delivered by Chief Juslioe
Fuller, ltcunicup on the petition
of Sheriff Tyler, of Aiken Count}', I
for a writ of habeas corpus to release (
him from imprisonment under the
judgment of the Circuit Court of
the United States that he be lined
$500 for contempt. lie had seized
a train on the South Carolina li.iil
way upon a warrant issued by the
State authorities for the collection
of taxes which wore in controversy.
The road was in the hands of a receiver
appointed by the United
States Court, and lie was adjudged
guilty of contempt for failing lo
release the property under the order
of the Court. He came to the Su ,
pre in e Court for relief.
Justice Fuller read an opinion ]
containing much stronger language t
than is usually found in such documents,
denying Ll.o application of 1
the petitioner for the writ. II ) sai 1
that the seizure of the property by
force was unjustifiable and could i
not bo defended. The claims of the : ,
State for taxes are not superior to i
the general rule which makes prop-|1
crty placed in the hands of a rocci\ 1
er subject to the orders of the Court. ]
They are to be determined in the
regular way and in a proper manner.
The action of the Circuit Court,
Chi .1 ustico Fuller said, was in no
sense an action against t lie Statu of
South Carolina, which it was concluded
could not be maintained tin
der the 1 Hit amendment to tlio Constitution.
In conclusion, he said, tlio Circuit
Court was equipped with the fullest
power to protect its dignity and to
enforce its inundates, and its use of
these powers in the case in point
could not he reviewed lioic. Therefore
the petition for a writ of habeas
corpus was denied.
The same judgment was announced
in the cases of Sheriffs Riser and
Cains, who came to the I nited States
Supreme Court with Tyler for relief.
