The session of the County Sunday
School Convention at Honoy Camp
24-2Cth is said to have been pleasant
and profitable. There was a scarcity
of preachers present, but the discussions
were interesting and instructive
and good was done. The
following delegates were elected to
the State Convention at Abbeville

Nannie Boaty, Miss Leila Beaty,
Mrs. P. O. Floyd, Mrs. Louisa Barn
hill, Miss Daisy Norton, Miss Ettie

of Adrian, in this issue of the Herald.
Mr. Ilardee has recently
established a large mercaHtile
business at Adrian, b. U., and is
carrying a large and well selected
stock of goods. Ho is selling goods
the very lowest cash prices, and
all such energetic and worthy young
men as Mr. Hardee deserve to be
patronized.
Senator Irby should be more considerate
in expressing himself about
the establishment of International
relations With Gehenura and the party
whom he would recommend a? Minister
to that region. Unfortunately
the relations are more intimate than
international with the Huler of that
dark kingdom, they aro individual
and personal and the edorts of all
good men should be directed to
breaking and destroying this relation.
An enterprising young man took
up in jail Jast Monday for passing
illicit mou|y. As we are informed
he colored a nickel with "Diamond
Gold Paint" and passed it on a
merchant for a five dollar gold piece.
The young man's enterprise was directed
in the wrong channel. The
aim of too many people is to get
? something for nothing and the experiment
invariably results disastrously.
There is a higher law than
mere success or money-making that
shoald command respect and shall
be obeyed at some time.
Gen. K, Kirhy Smith the la?*t full
general of the late Confederate
States died at Sewanee Tenn., at
11.30 P. M. last Tuesday 28th. His
death was sadden and unexpected.
Judge Gary is a young man, affa
hie and pleasant and presides with
ease and dignity. He has discarded
tho official robe and presides withDut
ofllcia'l insignia. It always
seemed to ns that these official marks
were calculated to impress tho audilience
with the solemnity of the occasion.
Seventeen whales came ashore on
the coast of Horry a few days ago.
They seemed to have been driven

the shore testify.
The largest one measured about
seventeen feet in length and citizens
in the. community have cutout the
blubber and are extracting the oil.
We were not infornK-d bow many
were suitable for this purpose and
our informant said thai sotneuppeared
to be near the period of accouche
merit and whether these little ones
were counted to make the seventeen
we do not know. It is somewhat
singular that so many should voluntarily
come ashore at once without
some powerful impelling cause,
some one more familiar with the
habits of the whale may give a
reasonable account for their strange
action. I
The court for Horry assembled
last Monday with .ludgo Gary pre*
siding. All officers and jurors were
promptly in their places. The
grand jury was organized with J.
II. Richardson as foreman. The
Judge delitered a concise but com-[
prehensive charge and put the machinery
in motion.

There will be sent to you from
the office of the Comptroller General
blank warrant receipts, including a
blank afTlJavit for the signature
and affirmation of the Confedrate
soldiers of your County, who may
have lost a leg or an arm or an eye,
or have been permanently disabled
in leg or arm or eyes during the
military service of the years 18011864,
and after being signed returned
to this office* Under the act
applicants nro limited to thoee who
received a part of the appropriation
of 1879-81. There are 1175 applications
enrolled under these acts,
450 of whom lossed an arm or a leg
and 125 for disabilities, and their
was paid to these applicants upwards
of $22,000, not including some special
appropriations. To do the same
work the last legislature appropriated
5095. The basis upon which
appropriations for 1879-81 wore
paid was, the loss of leg above the
knee 1*100, below the knee 7o. loss
ot an arm above the elbow 1*60, below
the elbow $40, and for disabilities
from $15 and up according to
injury. We present these figures
which are approximately correct that
the applicants through you may
understand the difficulties confronting
the Board in disbursing this. fund.
It is hoped the more able will not
press their claims to the exclusion
of the more needy. The law does not
discriminate but it is the desire of
the Board that the most needy or
the absolutely needy be first supplied:
