II Traxler, of Tiinmonsville, Florence county, has been appointed State Dispenser under tho Dispen. sary law. He will accept the posi tion and will go to work to make the dispensary business a success. Mr. J. R. Parker, who has been employed at Beaufort, S. C., for several months, is homo on a visit to his mother, Mrs. W. L. Parker. Mr. Parker is looking exceedingly well and wo are glad to know that his health has so much improved. Mr. J. A. Cullum, of Ridge Springs, S. 0., lias an advertisement in this issue of The Hkkali). which should interest every admirer of One blooded poultry, lie is a successful poultry raiser and breeds only one blood of chickens. # ^ Our barber, M. B. Wineglass, informs us that he is going to reduce the price for shaving Court woek, from 15 to 10 cents. This will only remain so during Court week and Ieverbody should get a shave while in Conway next week. Gov. Tillman has given out the contract for the Dispensary bottles. The contract goes to an Augusta Factory with instructions to push their manufacture. The contract for making the jugs has been awarded to an Edgefield Factory. The liquor men are preparing to make a strong and united resistance to tho enforcement of tho law. It is very gratifying to the numerous friends of Gen. Wade Hampton to know that his nomination to the office of llailroad Commissioner was unanimously confirmed by the Senate without going through the usual formulary of reference to a Committ tee. It shows that the U. S. Senate appreciates his ability and worth. Gen. Hampton has filled different offices of trust and responsibility and he lias always discharged the duties with credit and distinction. \ 0 Capt. Carter, of New Jersey, was was indicted for transporting shell fish out of the Stato contrary to law. He was tried before Trial Justice Cooper on the Ilth, inst. when a mis trial was brdered because the x jury could not agree. The case was again tried last Tuesday with a large array of witnesses. The testimony adduced satisfied the jury that the combination was simply an attempt at evasion of the law and convicted Carter. lie was sentenced to pay a fine of forty dollars, or bo imprisoneMn County jail for fifteen days, lie paid the fine. . - o The South Carolina appointments still hang fire and President Cleveland's determination in tho matter is not definitely known to the publio. Cleveland will not bo in ain hurry , to make the appointment for this State. Col. Earle seems to be in the lead now for District Attorney, but what the ultimate outcome will be is extremely uncertain. Karle's political standing is mixed with doubt, he is soliciting the office through Till-mafcte influences at Washington. He has ability which Cleveland is inclined to recognize and make the r concession. Whether the appointment of Earle would tend to conciliate and harmonize the factions in this State is doubtful as ne appears to be a nondescript office seeker neither faction commanding his allegiance* Hemember Tho i>y?t?r Nupper. -A'. Mr. Hradshaw s was educated at Randolph Macon ^ College, Virginia, spending six terms , at that famous school. He has since ? his graduation mainly followed the , profession of teaching, lie married ^ May 10th, 1882 Miss E. V. Bishop N of Campbell County, Vu. Mr. Bradshaw took charge of Bur- j roughs school in 1801 and managed j it successfully lip to the time he was {] stricken down by disease about a t week ago. Never very vigorous j physically the burdens of school c overtaxed his powers and rendered ( him an easier prey to the feel-des- ( troyer. During his illness in his i wanderings he was in the school room instructing, commanding, per- j forming usual functions of professor. f Professor Bradshaw was quiet, un- . assuming in his deportment, mild and gentle in manner, decided in ( convictions, firm and unobtrusive in his religious profession. His work on earth has been finished and God has taken him to his rewarU on high. He will he buried this morning from the family residence near the Methodist Church at 10:110 A. M. It will never be entirely iradicated from the body politic unil there is a law absolutely prohibiing the appointment to a suborlinate position by any official of any nemberof his immediate family. As predicted exclusivey in these dispatohes tho President o-day nomination Gen. Hampton' for commissioner of railroads. With-1 in twenty minutes after Gen. Hampton's nominated was presented to the Senate lie was confirmed* His nomination was not even referred to a committee. Not a murmur was raised against him, and to-night lie is receiving the congratulations of his friends. The correspondent of The Arews and Courier had the pleasure of confining to Gen. Hampton tho first intelligence of his nomination and confirmation. Tho General was at the Metropolitan Hotel, and jr.st about to start to the Capitol to see (Jen. Gorman in behalf of some South Carolina friend. The (Jencral expressed his gratification at tho prompt and complimentary action ? upon his nomination. (Jen. I happen to know that a letter to President Cleveland, bearing the endorsement of all of the Republican and Democratic Senators, was prepared, and it would have boon forwarded to its destination but for the intervention of Gen. Hampton. \viiilo he appreciated the great com- , pliment intoned by his former asso i ciates, he said lie would rather have the letter for his own personal gratification than have it presented to , the President. Ilonce the letter was never forwarded to tho President. There is a more hopeful feeling here to night among tho Anti-Tillman element from South Carolina. Gen. Hampton's appoiutnient creates an impression that the Conserva. tives will not be forgotten by the President. Rnfcler! and Earle may bo the result. An Egg of very peculiar confirmation* was handed yesterday by Mr.S. A. Causey. A hen belonging to Henry Hranton Is the author of tho /units naturae. The small end is decidedly elongated and curved at a right angle with the body. It measures in length following the curve 111 inches, straight 21 inches. The shell has been broken at the small end and seems normal.
