The Hon. fames H. Rlount of
Georgia was the recipient of an extraordinary
compliment in the House
of Representatives to-day. It is not
often that a man hears his virtues incited
or euolgizcd while lie himself

been the fashion to have both houses

recit" his virtues. Today when
Mr. Blount, as chairman of the For ;
eign Affairs Committee, reported
the diplomatic and consular appropriation
bill and had it passed through
the committee of the whole his fel

nity to compliment him.
Mr. Blount retires from Congress
at the end of a session -voluntarily
retires. Ho declined a renotnina-,
lion. lie will have served 20 years
in Congress, lie entered tlie House
of Representatives nt the same time
as Roger CJ Mills, Richard P. Bland
and Joseph G. Cannon* William S.
Holmun of Indiana and ('buries < >'
Neill of Pennsylvania were there
before him. From his first entnui
ce to tho House Mr Blount took an '
active and earnest part in the pro
coolings. There is no member of
the House more generally respected
and none whose honesty, candor and
integrity there is more confidence
in.

Mr. Hitt of'Illinois spoke for the
Republican side and the minority of
the Foreign Affairs Committee and ,
also complimented Mr. Blount for
broad patriotism and ability and his
intelligence ns a legislator, Mr.
Bland of Misouri had also something '
to say in regard to Mr. Blount iu a
reminiscent and pleasant strain. Mr. I
O'Neill, the father of the House, I
also complimented Mr. Blount in a
few well chosen words, as did Mr.
Springer of Illinois und Mr. MoCro
ary of Kentucky. It was a surprise
party for Mr. Blount, and when he
arose to make acknowledgement of
the compliments paid him his voice
was shaky. lie said, however, that
the confidence expressed within the
past few minutes would bo to him
the proudest event of his life and
not only a matter of pride to him, |
but also to his wife and children.
When he concluded,he was applauded
by the whole House. It was an
extraordinary proceeding in its way.
Never before has a member boon
complimented by his colleagues on
the eve of his departure from public
life at least from Congress- Every
thing said about Mr. Blount was happily
true and well merited. 11 is departure
from the House is a positive
loss to Congress and to the public
service. His long service made
him familiar with tlio duties o. Congress
and his ability and his industry
were exercised in the service of
the people.
