The road hands are opening the
new road which is a continuation ot
the street running just North of thv
Court house and will intersect the
o d road at or near Hear Swamp.
This road can be made a great con
venionce to the traveling public, but
will require the expenditure of considerable
labor and money. By tbis
route the long and deep sand on the
old road will be wholly avoided, and
whqjj flashed a good and substantial
road hiade.

George Washington's birthday
falls on next Wednesday, the 22nd.
The Lyceum League mentioned some
time back has determined to celebrate
it. There will be several recitations
and a discussion of the subject
"Resolved?That Washington
benefited his country more during
the Revolutionary war than during
his Presidency." There will be one
humorous piece on Washington's
oath at Mammonth.

been lying quietly for some time,
but has been resurrected in a new
shape. Suit is now brought in the

the "Blue Ridge Bond Scrip,"
wh|ph has been definitely rejected by
our State Courts. This promises to
be a lengthy litigation and we hope
A-ill receive disappointment for his
trouble. The amount issued and
endorsed by the State is $5,000,000,
of which amount Wesley holds $1,000,000,
and for which he olaims he
lent the State $450,000. Every taxpayer
is vitally concerned in the settlement
of this question and we hope
the adjustment will be made in favor
of the State.

TAPPING FOK TURPENTINIS*
How the Pine Forests ol" the
South are being Slaughtered.

In Circular 8 of the Frostry Division,
published about a year ago, it
was stated, that tosts made on timbers
of long leaf pine, bled or unbled,
lent countenance to the belief
that bled or tapped timber did not
suffer in strength by virtue o. the
tapping. Further tests and examination
permit now tho announcement
without reserve that tho timber
of long leaf pine is in no way a fleeted
by tho tapping for turpentine.
This refers to its mechanical as well
as chemical properties, and henco
even the reservation that it might
suffer in durability is now eliminated
and any prejudice against tho use of
bled timber in construction, wherever
tho unbind timber has been considered
desirable, must fall as having
no foundation in fact, being
based only on vague belief, proved
to bo erroneous.
It is to be hoped that this fact will
be made widely known among builders,
architects and engineers who
have hitherto made discrimination
against bled timber, and thereby
depreciated or discouraged the manufacture
ami impeded thesale of an
article which answer all the purpose
of construction and the unrestricted
use of which is dictated by true economy.
The basis for the statement regarding
the mechanical properties
is furnished by n series of tests com
prising not less than 3G0 tests on 32
trees of this pine, bled and unbled,
from various localities.
The somewhat puzzling fact that
bled timber exhibited, if anything,
greater strength in the tests has been
acconntod foron t)ie fact that the turpentine
orchards are located mostly
on sites which produce better quality
timber as well as larger yield of
turpentine.
To determine whether any changes
in tho chemical composition take
place, a series of comical analyses
of bled and unbled Timber has been
made which indicates that the resinous
contents of tho heart wood are
in no wise affected by the bleeding
the oleoresins of the heart wood being
non-fluid, the whole turpentine

contents through tho tree, which
will be published in a separate bullentin,
it appears that trees standing
side by side and to all appearances
in similar conditions show very
varying quantities of resinous con
