~ 3 m The Horry Herald. Published Every Thursday E. NORTON, Editor J. T MAYERS, Gon'l. Managor. CONWAY, S. a, FEB. 8, 1898. Washington Lot t or. From our lingular Correspondent. Washington, January 'OS. 1893. Verily politics ilo make strange bedfellows. When the idea was advanced a few weeks ago of tho possibility of a populist, becoming a member of the Cleveland Cabinet it was poo poohed by the know it alls, as being too ridiculous for serious considerations. Now. there are good reasons for the belief that Judge Greshani. who caino very near to heing the populist candidate for President, has been asked by Mr. Cleveland to accept a place in his Cabinet. Democrats <>f promi nencc, among them Senators lirice, Carlisle, McPherson, Palmer and Cray, all supposedly in Mr. Cleve land's confidence, admit the proba bility of .Judge Greshatn being a member of the Cabinet. Senator Price goosfurtber and says he knows that .1 ndge Grcshum has been ten dored a place in the Cabinet. A friend of Judge Greshatn, who saw him when ho paid a secret and mysterious visit to Washingttn a fewdays ago, told your correspondent that he could go into the Cabinet, but that he judged from what the Judge said that he would prefer a placo on the bench of the II. S. Sni ireme Court, .lodge (Jresham has had some experience as a member of the Cabinet; he was Post master General under President A rt hur, Those w ho were at the beginning of the sessi jn confident that consideru blr> locdslnt imi r.iifciilo i !.< 1 r>-~ " B1""' appropriations would pass arc g? lting despondent, and with good reason, for with the republican loaders of the Senate apparently apathetic and tlie democratic leaders of the House in the same state of mind, the prospects of legislation cannot be considered even fairly good. Them is oven an attempt to cause the failure of quarantine legislation, and the anti-option bill, which was to have been voted on last Wed nesday is still unacted upon?it may be voted on this week, but no one feels certain about it, or indeed about anything else concerning Congressional legislation. One of the most interesting questions before this Congress is the admission of new States to the I nion, Four territoiies?Arizona, New M?\ico, Oklahoma and Utah?are claiming throuh their citizens, sent io w.^i r. .. .1 ? ? - ?? t? j?iui^iuii i * i i iiu imi'jKist'j I Dill they possess all of the the recjnisits for state-hood, ami indeed, some that were not required <>f others earlier admitted to the family of states. The House has already passed bills for the ndmisssion of the lirst two. and the bill admmitting the last has been favorably reported and will in all probability be passed by the house on the lirst suspension day. Individually the Senators with few exceptions appear to favor the ad mission of Jthe now applicants foi statehood; Senator IMatt, who provented action on any of these bills by the Senate committee on Territories, at the last session, now says that he will d<> nothing more against them than to east his own vote, and Senator Perkins, whoso influence was actively against the admission of Utah at the last session, is now earnestly working for its admission. If parties and politics did not enter the question it would be perfectly safe to predict that four more states would be added to the Union before the 4tn of March. It is nothing but politics that makes the outcome doubtful. A member of the Senate Committee said: "If any get in all will get iu. My own impression is that an omnibus bill including thern all will be put through" Th( republican Senators expeot to can cus on the question this week. Tim -..:i i -- a iiv v <111 <1 v? i ii 11 lilHlUiUIS illU il]? parently more interested in the Will introduced by Kepresentative John son, of Ohio, requiring those road: which cross any portion of tin United Slates to secure license! from the Inter State Commerce Com mission, and to fi'.e a bond agreeing to obey the orders of the cnmmissioi and to produce any evidence thai may at any time be required, thai in the Presidential message on tin subject now daily expected. The Grand Trunk and Canada Pacilk roads are opposing the bill, througl counsel, while competing America! roads ure advocating its passage. Senator Stewart, who refused to g< into a rennhliean caucus lmhl .^ui urday night to consider the Shermut bill to repeal the law /or the pur chase of silver, says ho Ins made ?i careful canvass of the Senate ami that it will he impossible to pass tin bill, lie says thnt some of the democratic Senators who voted for fre( coinage last session may be inducec by Mr. Cleveland's influence to sup port the hill, but that he has post five assurances from every republican Senator w ho voted for free coin age last year that they will vote against it, end also from Senators Carey, Warren ami Hansbrouglt, who voted against free coinage last year, and that half a dozen other republicans who are opposed to free j coinage will vote against the bill, because they are opposed to nry legislation on the subject at this session. The fact that the republi eati caucus made no attempt to com pel the members of that party to vote for bill seems to bear out the correctness of Senator Stewarts'* state! uvent. Without the means at hand for combating it, a cold may prove more dangerous thaii Mm small pox. No family is saf?? unless provided for such iin emergency.
