Associate Justice Lamar of the
United States Supreme Court died
in Macon, Ga, at 8.'50 I*. M. Jan.
23rd. He had been ailing for some
time, but was thought tD he gaining
in health, therefore his death was
sudden and a terrible shock to the
community. Ho was in his G8th,
year.

The United States Surpreme
Court has decided that it has r.o
jurisdiction in the railroad tax cases,
because the amount involved in any
single case did not amount to $2,000.
The court did not consider or determine
the merits of the case.
What course will be persued by
the railroads to have their rights, as
claimed, adjudicated we are .not informed.

died suddenly with no one present,

been at death's door for the last
twelve months or more.
Hill,Shaw was arrested Inst Saturday
night by W. 11. Bruton and
lodged in the County Jail on Sunday.
It seems he made no elTort to
escape, but lias been do iging in the
region of country lying between the
Waccnmaw river and the seashore*
The cold has served him up pretty
badly from reports, lie had ensconced

to the premises occupied by Mr B.

Itev. 1). A. Calhoun could not,
reach the first Quarterly Conference
of his circuit, because of the freeze,
nhil worshipped with the congregation
of the Conway Station on Sunday
and preached Sunday night.
He preached on Dnty and his sermon
was well conceived, well delivered
and well received. The circuit
is to be congratulated on having so
able a minister, and to maintain its
position in the Conference it should
make liberal provision for his sup
port.
