THE IfofffiY HE^jILD, o ? Published Every Thursday, CONWAY, S. C., DEC. 22, 1892. LOCAL NEWS. Next Sunday is Christmas. ? o Dr. E. A. Casque returned to Marion yesterday. o Capt. J. M. Oliver will have the model store of Conway when lie gets it completed. There will be a Masquerade party given at the residence of J. T. Mayers next Monday night. The repaid of the anti-free pass bill f.dled to pass, Sentator Derham voting against the repeal. Dr. Capers's health will not permit his teaching in Georgetown as announced, but he will make Columbia his home. o The March term of Court 1803 will be presided over by the new Judge, Ernest Gary, and the Octo . ber torm by judge T. B. Eraser. Dr. K. Norton went to Columbia yesterday. lie will return Friday, accompanied by his daughter, Miss Daisy, who will spend the Christmas hollidays at home. The health of James G. Blaine is again reported precarious. His disease has assumed a threatening aspect and has brought his family to realize his danger, so it is said. o 1 f money will avail the Republicans are determined to control enough Western States to retain conA_ 1 A I TT. Ji .1 L* A- _ i CI 1 i iroi ui ilie uiiiLeu otaies Donate, uut thoir plans will likely bo frustrated. o We are requested to announce that thoro will be a "Musical and Theatrical" performance given by some of the young men of Conway Friday night Dec. 23, at the Burroughs Academy. Senator Gibson, of Louisiana, died at the Hot Springs, Ark. Dec. 15th, of gout. IIo had just passed the throe score and ten limit, having entered on his seventy first year Sept. 10th, o The Kinsman truck farm, near Charleston, of thirty two acres was sold on the 15th, for *12,000, and the Eiserhoodt tract of seven acres for $3,000. These are the model truck farms of Chaleston Neck. o The streets of Conway have pre seated quite a lively appearance this week with people purchasing their Christmas supplies. Money was scarce and several bought produce of some kind to exchange for such ? hings as they wanted, or money. Every person who is in arrears more than one year for subscription to Thk IIkiim.d are requested to pay up before January 1893. We have been indulgent to our subscribers, and we hope those who are behind will come forward and help us what thoy can this month. This is only intended for those who are in arrears. o While you are selling chickens and buying Christmas tricks, don't forget that the HeraI.I) likes chickens too. One man came in town the other day with a cart load and wouldn't let us get up with him. He was a delinquent, and we never got close enough to tell him whether we would pay him the cash for them or not. 0 It is most singular that some people will celebrate the most glorious Christmas gift Ood ever gave or can give the world, by getting drunk ana mus exnieit meir ueasuy quail ties. Christmas should be a joyful occasion but it is not right to become enlivened by imbibing too freely of the Devil's spirits to celebrate God's Christmas gift to a dying and sincursed world. RepresenWtives Mishoe and Stalvey voted regularly and constantly for the railroad law, that is, as we understand the matter, to put the ^ railroads under the control and dill roction of three men who know little or nothing about'the management of railroads. The experiment may prove successful or injurious, but more likely the latter, as the prevail; ing sentiment among "the dominant element" seems to be to make their j power felt. i The Roper prohibition bill, which passed the House, has been sidetrucked in th#Senate with an unfavorable report. Editor Doar of the Georgetown times has learned an important lesson by the late election. Hear him: As tho News and Courier recently said, we have now "retired to the shades of private life," and can earnestly assure our friends and enemies that we have revised the list of our political associates; hereafter, we shall know who is who. o The concurrent resolution reques ting the Congressional delegation to vote for the freo and unlimited coinage of silver has been adopted by the legislature. This was a work of superogation, as the whole delegatiotij except possibly two, was committed by their election to this scheme. Mayor Kicked, of Charleston, is an honest and earnest reformer. It is reported that he will insist upon an ordinance to roduce his own sidary. This emphasizes the difference between some of the loud-mouthed State reformers and Mayor Ficken, as the latter never took the stump in favor of salary reduction. o The proposition to allow tho women of South Carolina to vote and hold ofllce had fourteen endorsers in the Senate, among whom was Senator Derhatn. At last, they voted against the indefinite postponement of the unfavorable report of the Committee to whom it was referred, but mav have done so to cot tho nucRtian v - - n * * i before the Senate for discussion. Female suffrage in other parts of the country where it 1ms been adopted has not been such a howling success, and wo very much doubt that a majority of the women desire the elective franchise conferred upon them. We view the attempt as an effort to degrade woman to the level of man, and contrary to the laws of nature. We call attention to the announce ment of the Weekly Constitution, published at Atlanta, Gu. The Constitution has more than 150,01)0 regular weekly snbsciibers. It wants 200,000, and wo commend it to our readers. No paper has done more for the upbuilding of the agricultural interests of the South than the Constitution. It has worked for years for the agricultural development of this section and for the betterment of the condition of the farmer?. With recent improvements and additional facilties the Constitution is now a hotter newspaper than over. and is in a position to push with increased vigor its magniilcient work for the agricultural development of the South. Being essentially a newspaper, and at the same time devoting much of its space to the very best of current literature and to such special features as are of peculiar interest to the farmers, it commends itself to every farming house-hold. It will be glad to furnish samplo copies on application. Address the Constitution, Atlanta, (la. The Reform Club dinner in New York has caused considerable talk among politicians, and all because Speaker Crisp was invited and expected to he called on for a speech, had prepared and given it to the press, and then was not allowed an opportunity to deliver it. We can see no special cause for complaint except that Crisp was full of speech and the time for accouchement never came. Crisp was elected on theanti* Cleveland ticket, and is aspiring to be ro-electod, hut whether as an opponent of Cleveland's tariff policy, or as a supporter of that policy, we are not informed. It is evident that Congress should be in hearty accord with the Administration on the most important measures to be proposed and considered. Cleveland is in position to dictate the policy of his Administration end ho has the nerve and back bone to exercise his prerogatives. It is said the position assumed by the Speaker in the speech he did not deliver on tariff reform, and that President Cleveland in the speech he made at the Keform Club dinner are very similar in all essential particulars. Let harmony provail in the counsels of the party and future success is assured and relief from present financial oppression will i i. ?.-j- ' ? uo w) 11 curiam extent acnioveu. With many clergymen, public speakers, singers, and actors, Ayer's Cherry Pectoral is the favorite remedy for lioarsneess and all affections of the vocal organs, throat, and lungs. Its anodyne and expectorant effects aro promptly realized. Not every woman, who arrives at middle age, retains the color and beauty of her hair, but every woman may do so by the occasional application or Ayei's Hair Vigor. It prevents baldness, removes dandruff, and cures all scalp diseases* \VAI>E HAMPTON'S WAY. When the "Grand Oht Man** Says u Thing Ho Means It. Washington, Dec, 17.?George (J. Tanner, a Confederate soldier hikI Iiolitical follower of Gen. Wade lampton, wrote to him and urged him to reconsider the resolution re. fusing to again enter South Carolina politics, lie also outliued certain plans by which he believed tho General could triumph over his enemies. To this letter Mr. runner has re* ceived tho following reply: Colunbia, S. C., Dec. 18, 1891?. Dkak Tannkk: I am obliged to you for your kiml letter, which reached 1110 h few days ago. Under no possible circumstances or persuasion would I iake any place offered mo by South Carolina. I was urged to become a candidate for Governor at the last election, but I refused; nor would I Hccept the position if every man in the State desired me to do so. I have settled my accounts between the State and m^ self, and 1 am perfectly satisfied with the result. 1 am rejoiced only to know that the affection'of my old soldiers for me remains unshaken, in storm as in calm.
