It is said two members of the legislature,
who voted against the repeal
of the anti-free pass bill, had freo
passes in their pockets at the time.
IIow suoh sanctimonious hypocrisy

beyond comprehension.
Mrs. Elizabeth Mincy died in
Josselyn, Ga, Nov. 30th. Mrs. Mincy
formerly lived in this county and was
highly respected. She went to Georgia
with her son, A. F. Mincy, who
did all ho could for her in her last

was a good woman and died in the

Hy reference to Congressman McLiurin's
letter in another column it
will bo seen that a competitive examination
will be liehl at Florence
S. C. on Dec. 30th, to fill the vacancy
in West Pointjfrom this congressional

opportunity for some aspiring young
man to reap the advantages of an excellent
school, and we hope someono
or more from Horry will compote for
the prize.
While our exchanges arc luuding
tho first efforts of the now Mothodist
pastors, we feel justified in saying
that Conway's new pastor excels any
we have had in several yoars judg.

We do not claim to be a competent
judge, but in our opinion the sermon
* ^ preached last Sunday morning by
jB Rev. A, J. Stafford is not often surpassed
for beauty of language, perspicuity
of thought, eloquence and pathos.
The editor of the New York Sun

the three former have large lino

Arow up with few if any systematic
or well grounded ideas of their
obligations to the world, their associates
and themselves. They have
t been, from their earliest recollection,
forgiving, their faults overlooked,

follies apologized for and excused.
They are never impressed with the
idea that right is right, and that
they have no right to be wrong, but
grow up full of the notion, that if

The legislature is moving very
slowly anil cautiously with one eye
looking longingly homeward to son
what effect certain measures proposed
has on the pop ilar mind and the

The December Wido Awake is a tare
Christmas number. It has the full Christmas
flavor, from tho brilliantly colored
frontispiece that ends it. On the opening

and serves as the initial to Margaret Sidney's
quaint ode "To tho One. Whoever
Ilo He," who discovered tho toothsomo

illustrated by Joseph Penned: it is followed
by Mr. Standard's capital Christmas
storv, Mr. Van Oclt's Case," which
is full of the best Christmas spirit, and
recalls the popular Christmas stories that
so lncreassd the fume of Charles Dickens.
Mrs. Sandhnm's practical paper for
Christmas celebration is entitled "The
Vagaries [ot Santa Clans;' a Christinas
balled by It. Macdonald Alden, "How
Lajla Found the Christ-child," is beautiful
illustrated by Merrill. "How Jonathan

interest to the boys. It is by Cuptain
Cumnock, captain of Harvard '00's football
team, and is some "Advice to School
Foot-ball Captains." It is pithy, practical
and to the point. George Converse ^
Fiske tells about "Our Iceboat," and >how v
it collapsed; Tlieron Brown's "Christmas ?|

this delightful number, which is full of
