The HoiffiY o Published Every Thursday, CONWAY, S. C., DEC. 15,1892. LOCAL NEWS! /"* w?? avo heard a good 1 opart from 11 the first effort of Rev. D. A. Calhoun on the Conway circuit. He lias made a good impression. o Dr. E. A. Casque of Marion, is at the Commercial hotel, ami will remain until Saturday. All persons Idesir'.ng dental work will do well to call on Dr. Gosque. o Mr. 11* iritcover, of Marion, representing the Elkhart Masonic Mutual Life?-Aasociation of Elkhart, Iml., was in town this week. o Gov. Tillman has ordered an extension of time for the payment of taxes to Jan. 1st, 181)3. This will be good news to a great many people who were casting about for ways and means to meet their obligations. U. T. Bloodworh who was section master of the fourth section \V. O. & C. R. R* Ijjst year, died at his home in Pender County N. O. after a short illness "Bob" was a clever young man and made some warm friends in this county. It is said two members of the legislature, who voted against the repeal of the anti-free pass bill, had freo passes in their pockets at the time. IIow suoh sanctimonious hypocrisy can be stuffed into a human hide is beyond comprehension. Mrs. Elizabeth Mincy died in Josselyn, Ga, Nov. 30th. Mrs. Mincy formerly lived in this county and was highly respected. She went to Georgia with her son, A. F. Mincy, who did all ho could for her in her last illnoss which lasted six weeks. She was a good woman and died in the triumphs of the gospel faith. Hy reference to Congressman McLiurin's letter in another column it will bo seen that a competitive examination will be liehl at Florence S. C. on Dec. 30th, to fill the vacancy in West Pointjfrom this congressional District. This affords a fine opportunity for some aspiring young man to reap the advantages of an excellent school, and we hope someono or more from Horry will compote for the prize. While our exchanges arc luuding tho first efforts of the now Mothodist pastors, we feel justified in saying that Conway's new pastor excels any we have had in several yoars judg. ing from last Sunday's discourse. We do not claim to be a competent judge, but in our opinion the sermon * ^ preached last Sunday morning by jB Rev. A, J. Stafford is not often surpassed for beauty of language, perspicuity of thought, eloquence and pathos. The editor of the New York Sun proposes to e^ect a mammoth building for its local habitation. Me has not the superficial area of ground surface io construct au extensive building, but there is no limit to ownership skyward, so the building will be thirty stories high. The big dailies, Times, Tribune, World and Sun are all in close proximity and the three former have large lino t buildings, while the Sun still occu\ ' pies small quarters, but expects soon to overtop them Jay Gould in his last will made provision for the payment of $5,000.-"to to his s^l George for his salary ' * flirt III at Ml/ill tra VunfJ niwl in nn.> ' ""V I ??s# w viivmv J v?(?l fj ItllU III UUII j oration of the icmarkable genius developed for managing his father's f X vast fortune. There is also a pro -1 vision that if any one of his children marry without the consult of a ma- j jority of the others that lie or she shall forfeit to the others one-half of his or her share in the estate. This shows his estimate of the power of gold. They have t been, from their earliest recollection, forgiving, their faults overlooked, ! their bad work patched up, their follies apologized for and excused. They are never impressed with the idea that right is right, and that they have no right to be wrong, but grow up full of the notion, that if they "do the best they know how.'1 The legislature is moving very slowly anil cautiously with one eye looking longingly homeward to son what effect certain measures proposed has on the pop ilar mind and the other eye shut in imitation of their distinguished guide and leader. There wore perhaps never so many measures introduced aud discussed with no intention of pissing them into laws. We have never believed that the legislature intended or desired to I?IS3 I u prohibition biU,or a salary reduction bill. When there is the will the way will be found- Wo ontortain serious doubts that tlw ostensible advocates of these measures desire thorn to become law. But when it comos to regulating railroads and other obnoxious corporations the legislature jumps on them with both feot and with practical unanimity. They seem determined to strangle corporations or to so cripple and hamper us to render them powerless for good or evil. Who will bo benefited by such procedures will bo developed in the future. Death lias invaded our community and removed our dear young brother W. K. Hughes, son of William Hughes. Born Nov. 7th, 18GI, was baptized into the fellowship of tho Springfield Baptist churoh in the Kail of 1881; married Miss Flora Hughes, daughter of Samuel Hughes, Columbus county, N. 0.,in the early part of 1801. lie made bis home with his wife's aged father, and was genial, kind and useful in his new position as in all the relations of life, His affections were warm and his friendship true. His devotion to the church and hei interests were marked and cordial. lie was not satisfied simply with affording financial aid, but loved to encourage others and strengthen the hands of Sunday School workers. The light of his truly christian Character over shone among those with whom his lot was cast. The grim monster had evidently marked him for his prey and though uie mi 11 iscrations ol jioving hands were tender and unremitting, yet tlio solicitudo of friends and the application of remedies with medical skill wore unavailing to arrest the execution of the dead sentence. After a protracted illness he passed quietly away on Oct 19th, 1S92 and entered upon the rest that remains to the people of Ood. Tbo funeral services were conducted at his old home by Elder 1). N.
