TheIToiffiY He^ild, o Published Every Thursday, LOCAL NEWS. M iss. Lottie McKeithan of Southport, N. 0, is visiting her brother Mr. J* M* McKeithan. o i ? A wild young woman in a state of nudity is running at large in Texas and feeding on grass | and cictus buds. i o The Baptist State Convention was in Session in Aiken this week Hon*. W. D. Powell of the Mexican mission was in attendance. Gilbert Potter, of New York, has been in town and county this week looking after his financial interests. He-is as lively and genial as usual. llev. B\ A. Bright, who has served Conway Ot. acceptably for two years, left yesterday for his new work near Sunimerville. Rev. K. P. lltuson left yesterday by Stinr. Maggie via Geogetown and Charleston for his appointment, Seneca city, in the extreme Northwest of State. Mr. W. T. Pullen, relief agent, took charge of the express office at this place last week, while Mr. McKeithan was in Wilmington taking in Welcome Week. o For considerate kindness to travelers commend us to the officers of the Stmr. Maggie^ especially the urbane and thoughtful captain. We arc under many obligations tor kind nosses shown us on our recent trip to Charleston. Gov. Tillman has our thanks for a copy of his message to the legislature in pamphlet form. It is a lentrtnv and niainlv an Able dnc.u I ment. We dissent entirely from him in his sharp criticisms of the judi ciary, and deplore the fact that he should have done it. The legislature will likely appropriate $50,000 to Clerason Oollege for the purpose of completing the buildings and putting the school in operation at an early lay. This should have been done last year, the promise that the College should not cost the people a cent to the contrary notwithstanding, for everybody of ordinary intelligence knew the' promise could not be kept and was mere buncombe. II. A. Strode has resigned the presidency of Clemson College and the name of W. C. Benet has been suggested for the position. Mr. Benet appears to be a chronic candidate for ofTlce and it is said he is adapted by education, training! and experience to this position ami the trustees might go farther from home unci iare worse in securing a competent, and capable man for the [presidency of Clemson College. o Rev. Dr. W. T. Capers, who was superannuated at the last Conference in Charleston, wishes to make Georgetown his future homo and desires to establish a night school for the instruction of young men whose early opportunities of acquiring knowledge were hindered. This* exhibit^a commendable and philanthropic spirit on the part of Dr. Capers and the young men should manifest their appreciation by forming a large and remunerative class. There are more young men in the Senate than I over saw before. Some of them are very talented and cap able. John Gary Evans, of Aiken, Stanyarn Wilson, of Spartanburg S. C. Mayfield of Barnwell, Walter Hazzard of Georgetown, John P. Derham, of,Horry,"and I). E. Finley of York are excellent young men and highly educated* A strangor would bo, more likely to take them for theological students than grave Seniors. The above is taki n from the Abbeville Medium} and we are curious to know what wonderful transformation has happened to our friend, the vouncr Senator from this County, to give him any resom bianco to a theological student, o There are circumstances th.?t lead men to abandon the work of the ministry, to go into business, politics, or some kind of secular professional /life. They stop doing ministerial dutv; they lay aside ministerial work-jBut they claim to bo ministers. Whey style themselves "Kef." They assume to be the ordaired servants of God. but their life is given up to money-making. Thoy are speculators. They will perform the marriage service, and now and then } preach; but they have given up the duties of the ministryv And thoy are in this false position for want of a legitimate and proper way out of the ministry. Tney have something that they do not want, but can no more lay it down than a man can unclasp a fully charged electric wire. ?O/iristiivi Enquirer. HORRY H The recent session of the TTestern North Carolina Conference at winston accepted the proposition of Hasil N. Duke to insure fifty men between the ages of 40 and 50 years for 10,000 each for the benefit of the Trinity College endowment fund on condition that the State Confer1 ences guarantee the running expenses of the College until a sufiiciency can be realized from this plan of endowment to relieve the conferences of i further obligations. This insures a liberal endowment fund in tho natural courss of events of $500,000. More property was sold la>t Salesday under foreclosure of mortgages than has been done for some time. : Considering the stringency in money matters the amount realized is not ? -r .. - n ivsi ?i uie value of the property. Some of tho property sold was very valuable, well located for agricultural and commercial purposes, and was knocked down at a low price on account of the scarcity of money. A large and enthusiastic attendance of veterans is confidently expected at the next meeting in January. These meetings can be made very interesting and instructive as every participant in the late war lias some reminiscence worthy of preser vation and every one should feel tho duty incumbent upon him to cohtri bute his mite to the conservation of me truth of history. It would not bo n bad plat: for each veteran to write out in extonso bis experience and observation in the late war ai d lilo with the Association. This would be a means of maintaining interest in the organization and the future historian would fairly revel among such documents, hot every veteran attend thenext meeting and make it eminently successful. o The 52iul Congress met last Monday in second session. Not much, except passing the various appropriation bills, will likely be done at this session, li expires by limitation the 4th of next March, and, therefore, does not allow much time for the consideration and discussion of important measures. There is some talk of an extra session of the 5lJrd Congress, but that is uncertain. .Some Democrats argue strongly for uu extra session, saying tho result of ?l lie <-> * * niu uK-ouim mvors rami reiortn ami that the people should not be deprived of the benefits of tariff reduction for so long a time. The pension laws require overhauling and adjusting to the necessities of the taxpayers. This is about as burdensome as the tariff and the present system equally as iniquitous. There is a probability that the pensions will be socn enormously increased unless some method is devised to modify it. Cleveland's most intimate friends are rather opposed to an extra session, and Cleveland's own great good sense will enable him to determine the questiou for the best interests of the country. The award of tho certificate of \r i? - i > uicuuua iu :>iiurtty, nepuoucan, in the 7th District instead of to Moise, Democrat, taken in connection with the present effort to redistrict the State and put Charleston in the black district clearly indicates the political drift of the udomuiant element." The defeat of J Wm. Stokes for Congress by W. II. Br.iwloy, mainly through Charleston's vote, has evidently inspired the attempt at re-districting, and the award of the certificate of election to Murray, Republican to our mind, shows Tillmanite affinity for Republicanism rather than for the Conservative element of the Democracy. (Moise was a Conservative.) Now, if tho legislature can so manipulate the Districts as to throw Charleston in nn overwhelmingly black District, the last (opportunity for defeating an Ocala or Omaha candidate for Congross is removed. Tho occurrence of one of these things without the other would have had li.tlo significance, but the concurrence of the two clearly shows tlx. intention of the reigning dynasty Tho legislature is in tho midst of its most active work. Nothing of special importance has yet been accomplished. The resolution to call a constitutional Convention has pas i i i ir i mi * ? ? rcu me J louse ana win prooaoiy pass tlio Senate. The members from Horry are not idle. Mr. Stalvey has introduced a bill to incorporate the Johnson Navigation and Manufacturing Company of lo^ry County; and Mr. Mishoe the following: A till which took tho form of an omnibus measure without having its back broken. The bill originally intended only to include Horry County, but was made to embrace Groonville, Colleton, Florence, Marion, Marlboro, Oconee, Aiken, Spar EKALD, THU tauburg, Williamsburg.
