in his reply to Senator Smith makes
an unmanly not to characterize it by
harsher term -insinuation that Senator
Smith did not write the article.
The Index certainly docs not know
Senator Smith or he would not be so
lavish of his wagers. The Senator
does his own thinking and writiiTg
and is abundantly able to take care
of himself in any controversy, especially
with a 22 calibre editor.
Mr. J. K. Cooper, our authorized

Dr. Tyre York, of North Carolina,
a prominent Republican who has
run for Governor of that 'State,
makes no secret of the fact that ho
will vote for Cleveland, and the State
and Congressional Democratic tickets.
Changes of prominent and influential
Republicans up North are
frequent and open. The indications
liow^point to Cleveland's triumphant
election on the 8th of November.

candidate for vice President on the
Republican ticket at his Ophir farm
iu New York and made a speech
strongly advocating the election of
Harrison and Reid. All tho I?opubiican
speakers claim that the country
is prosperous and attribute this pros
pcrity to die effects of the protective
tariff Well, perhaps they aro right,
for wo are satisfied that the prosper ,
ity of tnc South (backward?financial
distress) is attributable to the
effects.of the protective tariff.

This couit was romarkable for tho

vial causes. Some way ought to be
| devised to relieve the Court of these
' trivial cases, and we would suggest
| that the legislature can very easily
| accomplish this purpose bv slight
| modifications in existing laws. Trial
Justices have jurisdiction in all oases
now where the punishment docs ,not
exceed JO da\s in jail or *100, fine,
but where both are or can ho imposed
at the discretion of tho Court,

Trial Justice's jurisdiction. Some
modification in existing laws should
bo made, so as to allow Trial .Justices
to try such cases and not encumber
the Court with such petty cases
and subject the county to such expense,
the ends of Justice do not demand
it.
The Iti-punlicun Rally.
There was quite a disappointment
among the negro population on last
Friday, tho appointed day for tho
grand Republican rallv.
Of the numerous prominent speakers
who were designated on the program
to address tho fellow citizens
of their race, only a few turned up.
They had to be content with the
"lion. I)easv, and 4 Prof. Gordon,"
and ihe lesser lights.
After tho arrival of tho train
about 75 or 100 of all si/.es and sex,
( marching to t he martial(?) strains of
the colored bras* hand, proceeded
to their school house where a "scaffold"
had been erected under a large
oaklrce. Hero they all halted
and listened with attentive ears.
The firist speaker was their former
standing tin.did. ' > for congress?E.
II. Dense.

so don't know what lino he pursued,
?am told that he advised them to
voto thairfederal tic.kc-t but Vote
with the Democrats in State and
county. If you wish this part cor
rect you better get substance from

Other speakers followed, among
whom were Thos. Brown, .1. Q.
Clark and George Singleton. They
ill I asserted their loyalty to the lie
publican parly, and their hatred for
the Democratic party. They were
born BepnbJieans, had alwaysjjlived
Republicans, and they proposed to
die clinging to the same old faith; no
negro could bo true and vote the
democratic ticket.
Olio suggested that "we vote the
federal ticket and let the rest go to
"fiddler's green," another proposed
that, "as our leaders will not give us
a State ticket, let us put a county
ticket in.the field in order to arouse
the young of our race."
Some denounced their present leaders,
one suggesting that, "how can
we ever expect to do anything when
we have such notorious loaders as
Webster, Bray ton aud Dens."
They all, however, agreed on the
one advice to "see to it that yon
have your registration ticket 011 the
morning of election, you had as well
start to heaven without grace as to

ticket."
The crowning, and most bittor,
speech of the day was made hy Post
Master Gordon.
Says, he: "Wherever I go I am
always proud, and am not afraid, to
proclaim the fact that I am equal to
any man. They may clique and
pass their registration laws, but they
can't disfranchise me. Talk about voting
with tho Democrats; I would
vote for the Devil before I would a
Democrat. Should I ever vote with
them I hope my right arm may rot off,
and I sink 6000 feet straight down
in It 1. A negro who votes the
Democratic ticket is a jackass, and
hasn't sense enough to protect himself
from a shower of rain. He is a
liar in Ids heart and a scoundrel in
his actions."
Speaking of the action of some of
tho citizens in destroying tho Democratic
stand which he had secured
from individual parties for the occasion,
he said it \^as "a mean contemptible,
dirty trlek." lie had opposed
the use of the stanci from tho
beginning; he never had stood on a
"Democratic plat norm;" that j.horo
had been so many lies told on this

of South Carolina in the hands of
the lower classes of people, and it is
probable that they will keep it. The
Tillman faction is a weak sot, hot it
is a family light and wo propose to
let them light it out, Stealing was
done before, and 1 guess stealing is
still going on. Supplementing this
with an anecdote, he inquired, if
they were going to sell tho Republican
party for the d ? d alliance.
Ho claimed that nn injustice was
done the negro in excluding the
majority from si*ting on jury. Hvery
man has a right to ho tried by Ins
peer.-; then why not let us try ourselves?
