every dray, and hack and carriage is
driven by clever, wide-awake young
men; whore white barbers shave you,
and white folks do everything and
are not ashamed of it, I know young
whito men in my town who are during
for $25 a month who could make
$50 or $G0 running a dray, but they
won't do it because it looks niggery.
1 know poor girls who won't hire to
co<?k or clean up the house for the
same reasons. All labor is honorable
here. A young whito man has
just made up my bed here in the
hotel, and ho talked to me intelli
gently and pleasantly while he
cleaned up the room, lie is earning
honest money, and will get a hotter
place after awhile. There are but
. twenty-five or thirty negroes in
Brown county. There is but one in
Gomaehe county, that joins this.
He runs on the train, and said his
name was Newton Fields, and he
had the honor of being tho only
darky that was allowed to stay. It
seems that there were about a hun- j
drcd in Camanche county, and one of
them committed an outrage, and the |
citizens gathered and made them all
leave the county within twentyfour
hours. I believo it will cotne
to that in Gcrogia. Visiting summary
punishment upon one does not
seem to do any good, and the way 1
to do is to hold his kinfolks and hi* '
settlement responsible. These Tex- j
ans use no timiJ measures about
anything. They are the most inde- I
pendent and self-reliant people I '

If you hire one she quits when she
pleases. No contract will bind them.
We have borne with all this for
peace, but there is a growing alienation
between the races. 1 didn't
realize how bad it was until 1 got'
hero and seen for myself how much
hotter it is to get along without
thorn. They are anjeverlnsting worry
at my house and among my neighbors.
It cost twice as much to live
when you have a negro cook. A
friend out here who was raised with
the negroes and owned them said
that in almost every famely ir.
