people of Horry deserve no credit
for it. Where Townsend was known

Judge Hudson has been somewhat
dimmed- Wo never could under
stand how any man could vote for
Townsend in paeference to Johnson,
they certainly did not expect him to
make a better Solicitor.

Caucus has supplanted the Convention
and to the injury of the public
service. A dozen or more men meet
and suggest a ticket and the people
swallow it like a sugar coated pill.
Qualification is not a consideration
for election to responsible official
positions, but does the party belong

than the convention, because more

Baptist will bo issued from tho

Every Baptist in Horry County
should become a subscriber. It is
necessary and important for every
^-eburoh membor to keep posted as to
tho workings and progress of their
respective denominations, and furthermore,
it will be tho object of the
Baptist to infuse new life and energy
among the members. Tho
Baptist will be a 16 column paper
published every Saturday at 75 cents
a year, six months 40 cents, throe
months 25 cents.
Tho cholera is prevailing to an
apnall'ng extent in Hamburg and
is moving westward. Quarantine at
^nll the Atlantic ports is very exacting
to prevent its invasion of
American critics. Several deaths
have already occurred in |New York
harbor from cholera infected ships.
Quarantine rules are rigidly enforced
and it is hoped the plague can
be prevented from getting ashore,
or at least oonfincd to voryjnarrow
limits. The {ravages are fearfnl in
Hamburg and other eastern cities.
The authorities in the Atlantic cities,
are taking active measures to
prevent its introduction into this
St country.

majority for it in the State. The
question was not dismissed before
the people and it was not understood
by some, and tbey voted under a
misapprehension and some deliberately
and intentionally voufcd against

leaders, ministers, etc. Their conscience
may be easy on the subject,

inextricably complicated just now.
Those Third Party people claim to
be Democrats in State but Third
Partyitea in national polities. Phis
is inconsistent with honesty and fair
dealing*. What authority is competent
to formulate the creed of the
Democratic party? Is it not the
national party in Convention assambled?
If each Stafe was authorized
to adopt its own platform, the national
platform would he more vario
gated than the proverbial coat of
Jacob.
The indications now point to the
loss of the electoral vote of North
Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama
ai^d perhaps other Southern States
to the Democracy in the approaching
election. There is an active move
I ment among the leading Hepublicans
in this State which report
says, means that a State ticket wi 1 j
be put out at an early day. The intention
is to nominate only candidates
for Governor and Lieut. Governor
and county tickets in part.
This can hardly he done with the
expectation of carrying the election
for Stato oflicers, but to unify and
concentrate the party strength upoi;
their electoral ticket.
There is not the remotest probability

tho whites for the Democratic nominee.
But with the Third Party
contingent taken from the white vote
and thrown for the Populist electors
there is danger that the Republicans
may carry the State for Harrison
electors.

next Governor of South Carolina,
Public questions were thoroughly
discussed on the hustings and by the
press and time was allowed for each
man to come to a deliberate conclusion
and take it this judgement wat
expressed at the ballot box on August
30th. We wero opposed to certain
measures advocated by the
"dominant element,'' but as a majority
of the voters endorse them we
quietly submit. The three dollar
poll tax will bear pretty heavily
upon some people, but they know
their business ability best, and we
shall not interposo objections. The
repeal of the lien )aw|will operate tc
the disadvantage of some people, at
we think, but we do not think for
some people and if they prefer to
work for wages it is none of our business.
The Constitutional Convention
will cost considerable money ic
tho taxpayers, but certain measures
Cannot be had without a constitutional
convention, and when Gov. Tillman
says any measure is important
to promote the reform movement the
cost is no consideration. The educational
and property qualification tc
vote cannot be adopted without calling
this Convention. These and
other measures were strongly advocated
by Gov. Tillman in his recent
canvass of the State, and although a
large proportion of the legislature
was elected because of their attachment
to the caudal appendage o(
Tillman's outer garment, yet wc seriously
doubt that the legislature
