A PRKACIIEH-LIKE MAN.
But Ho Had Nerve ami was Handy
with His "Weapons."
Washington Star.
One of the most interesting of historical
duels took place in the suminor
of 18311. A young gentleman
of Natchez, newly wed, was on his
bridal trip, lie had been to New
York collecting bills for Natchez
merchants and was spotted by a
gang of sharpers. With his wife ho
took the steamer Orleans, of the
Diamond Jo line, at Pittsburg, and
between that city and Ionisville he
was invited to a game of 20 card
poker?an interesting variation upon
the usual sport, which involves only
the ten-spots and cards above that
denomination. It so happened that
lie lost not only what cash of his
own he had with him, but also many
thousands of dollars with which he
was entrusted. In his despair 'lie
tried to jump overboard, but was restrained
by a preacher-like man who
had coma 011 board at the last lauding.
Now it chanced that this preacherlike
man asked for a drink at the
bar, and in payingjfor it gave a $100
hill from what seemed to be a wellstuffed
wallet. The gamblers who
had won the young man's money
thought that another pigeon was at
hand to pluck. They asked him if
1,0 U'fllllll

and he said yes. At first it struck
the stranger that the ante *5, was a
little high considering the fact that
there was no limit, but he kept on
and did not murmur when he found
himself $500 out of pocket. He put
up a blind and the man at his left?
only three of them wore playing?
straddled it with $10. To make it
good he had to add *15, but that
was only the beginning. First one
of his opponents raised and then the
other until there was an enormous
sum in the pot. He himself had
four k'ugsand a ten-spot. Presently
they both "called," and he saw the
dealer slip a card to the player who
had made the straddle. Like a Hash
the preacher-like man drew ra murderous-looking
knife and said quietly,
but firmly, to the gentleman at
his left:
"If you lay down your hand and
six cards aro found in it I will kill
you!"
The third man who had dealt,
showed a full hand and the [preacher
like stranger swept all the money on
the table into his hat. Of course,
there was a row immediately, and the
gambler who had been threatened at
once challenged the winner to fight
him. The latter assented, asking
merely five minutes for preparation,
lie used the time in conveying the
cash, which amounted to nearly
$100,000, to the wife of the youth

the duel which was to take

opposite one another 011 the two-wheel-houses
of the steamboat, and
were told to fire at the word. They
did so, and the gambler, shot through
the body, fell into the river. His
adversary sought the young woman

Havcd By a Prisoner.
TiiVOharloston World.
Charlotte, N. C., June 20.?This
city was thrown into a whirlpool of
excitement this evening when it was
learned that Henry Brabham, the negro
oondemned to death for the murder
of the Italian J 11. Mocco had
attempted to make an end to Sheriff
Smith's existence.
This evening about seven o'clock.
Sheriff Z.T. Smith, who has charge
of the jail, as it is his custom, went
into tho jail to give the prisoners
their supper. As he came along
by llrabham's cell Brabham asked
him for some matches to light his
lamp.
While Sheriff Smith was feeling
in his pocket, getting the matches,
llrabham's cell door llew open and
he rushed at the sheriff, holding in
his hand the fragments of a chain
which had served to bind him
to the floor of his cell.
Before Sheriff Smith realized what
had happened Brabham had knocked
him senseless, and was in the act
of jumping 011 him and making sure
of his deadly purpose. About this
time Ilenry Caldwell, the ncgio
Brabham tried so hard to kill a week
or two ago, rushed to the sheriff's
aid.
With almost super-human efforts
I10 pulled Brabham from Smith.
About, this tinin KliovifT KmifVi'o
who is as plucky as hor husband,
rushed into the jail corridor. Seeing
the blood flowing from her husband's
bruised head, she raised two
pistols to Brabham's face, and warned
him if he did not return to his
cell at once he would recsivee the
contents of one or both, if necessary.
She, with her extra amount of
pluck quictted tho affair and Brabham
went into his cell, followed by
Mrs. Smith and her firo arms.
Sheriff Smith is painfully hurt,
but not serious. llis wounds are
deep flesh wounds.

Washington, July 1.?Calvin S

tho following letter to the ohairmar
of each State committee:
National Democratic Committee
New York July 1, 1801.? Dear Sir
The importance of immcdite prepar

of next year must he obvious to overj
Democrat. The timely and cncrget
ic conduct of our opponents would
ur warning enougn 11 mere wore nc
other reason for it. It is evident
that they expect decisive results upon
their extensive and well-organized
system of Republican clubs. It will
be sustsined by money without stint;
drawn from the pockets of the beneficiaries
of the, monopoly system
maintained by that party.
It can be met. only by an equally
extensive and well organized system
of Democratic societies. The latter
is more appiopriato to our purpose
since it was the first organization of
the Democratic party in the United
States, and was the instrument of
agitation and defence employed by
the fathers of the Democratic party
in the first great struggle in resistance
to federation and for
the restitution of constitutional government.
It is earnestly recommended that
every official in the regular organization
of t he Democratic nartvwifl son
1 'V "J. "V"
that everything within his jurisdiction
shall be done to aid and encourage
it. I desire to call your attention
to the work in course of successful
accomplishment by the executive
committeo of the National Assoaiatiou
of Democratic clubs, and to say
that their plan has been submitted
to and meets the approval of the national
committee.
The selection of correspondents
under this plan is of the greatest importance,
and under this date I have
written to the members of the national
committee front your State,
asking him to communicate with
you at once so that the proper selections
may ho made. The plan cannot
in any way interfere with the
State organization, and on the contrary,
proposes intimate co-operation
with the State committee as well as
with the national committee. It has
met with unprecedented success in
oilier States.
Trusting that you will give this
matter your favorable and prompt
attention, yours respectfully,
Calvin S. Brice,
Chairman Nat. Dotn. Com.
