Nov. 10, 1890.
A largo and distinguished delegation
of Irish leaders arrived in this I
city last week and are preparing to
make a tour in the
country in the interest of Ireland
and Home Utile. They have come
to address the American people as
the representatives of the Irish people,
and explain the thoughts and
aspirations of the latter in their
struggle with the Tory (lovernment.
The funds which thev hope to col loot
in this count ry are not, as might
be supposed, lo lvli'VC tllr i'llpt li
ding Irish famine, hut may he used
for that purpos* if found noces.-ary.
The (delegation has received a hearty ,
welcome from our citizens and will
be given a grand public reception at
the Metropolitan Opera House to
night. Prom hero they will proceed
to Boston, ('liieago, St. Lotti*-, and
other large cities after which lhe\
will separate and speak in different
sections of the country until New
year's. The delegation consists of
O'Brien and Dillon who escaped
from Ireland during their trial for
intimidation, together with Sullivan,
Harrington, ()'('ounor and Hill, all
members of Ha Hi anient.

stories about the ill-treauient of Indians
by Buffalo Bill are false. The

will be sent homo to their reservations.
The Wild West show is laid
up in Strasburg for the winter, and
Buffalo Bill will probably engage a
new force of indians in the Spring.
LlOHTINO i; I* A Kllli'A,
Henry M. Stanley, the explorer,
has arrived, and is renewing his old
uc<|uaintnncws, besides preparing for
a lecture tour of the country. 11?* j
has made a very full reply to charges
against him concerning the death
of his lieutenant Major Barttelet,
and claims that the latter met his
death fate deservedly. lie accused
Barttelet of atlrocious cruelty, and
I the other officers of the rearguard,
I .
he says, were selfish, irrcsolme, and
I cowardly. Many men, under Bart !
telot, were llogged to death, and
over a hundred of them died of starvation
in one place when they might
have been saved. Barttelet was of a
most violent temper, was shot dead
by a native chief whose wife he was i
boating and kicking for disobedience.
Stanley says that half the horrible
truth has not been told, and that
he has sntlieient evidence to vindi
cate himself in a legal suit. With
charges and counter-charges like
these we may well ask, do the natives
of Africa really need such "civilization?"

The importance of the bareful
study of language in order to the proper
pronunciation of words is not as
generally appreciated as it should belt
is really remarkable that so many

It is a popular fiction that a girl 1
