I sort, in common with the rest of the t'nilial States, New York City is at present undergoing the process of enumeration. Nine hundred men are engaged in the work here, and they are piling up the names at the rate of 200,000 per day. This is considerably (pucker than tliev were at the start, heeauso they have become more expert. It is now about lit" \cry worst time of the vear that could be picked*out for the work, a> the weather is so hot. and large numher.s of our population haxelefl town. TIk* latter fact will not cau.se the duplication of names, as even one must give his residence where it was mi .June 1st, and he is counted as living there. An expert who predicted the result of the census of jsso within IS,000 of the actual figures estimates that the population of the country by this census will reach (17,000,000, an increase during the past decade of more than do per emit. (Should this increase continue, our population 100 years from now will i?e nearly loot) million ?a- large as all the rest of the world together, and perhaps much larger than we would know w hat to do w it h. A I'l.KASA NT Til I NO. One of the pleasantest sights of tlit year is the annual parade of the ilrooklvn Sunday School Children, which took place last week. The parade this year was made up of leven divisons, ami comprised tlh,, (>00 children, tin army three times as strong in numbers as the regular army of the I'nited States. The public buildings and principal stores displayed the national colors, and thousands of dwellings along the line of the parade were decorated ? ;(i i ..til i, .in i> u, u 111 u* iiiki 111tic. ii was a genuine gala day for Hrooklyn, and all I lie public .schools together with many of the private schools were closed in order that tin* children might, take part in or view the turnout. Tho procession was reviewed l>\ the Mavor and city officers, and at its conclusion the children were served with refreshments. \ STl t'KN'lXU S micci: OK WilKK. The extremely hoi weather of the past week has caused a well-incrited alarm lest there he a water famine. The water in the Central I'ark reservoir has been steadily decreasing until there is great danger that there will not be enough to supply the city's wants. However, there is one great hope in sight if we can only hold out a little longer, and that is the conpletion of the new ne<|Uoduct. This stupendous undertaking, ??n which work has been in progress since 1885, will be in working order by the middle of July. We will then have sufficient water to supply the city, even if it grows to he live limoH airf big. Not only that, hut I ho water will come to lis with such force as to he carried to the top of an eight story building whereas at present the water hardly reaches the second story unless pumped. The! new Hcqucduct is a tunnel, thirty miles long, wide enough for a train of ears, through solid rock, and lined with bris'k. Ii has cost $15,000,000 and nearly one hundred 1 i\t -. T11 K WASH I N<?TON LKTTItlt. i Uegultir Correspondent. 1X90. Secretary Blaine is again the ecntral figure in a very interesting bit of gossip. It i? stateil here and believed by many people, that be is to retire from the cabinet ami be elected president of the International American Bank, which is to he organized tinder the pro\isions of a hill now before Congress, which lies been soeeinll v i'oiii?m?i?ili>il l?v Mr i J 'V Harrison in a special ines-age to Congress. As the new hank is to have a capital of s^.'>,uuo, oix> with the privilege of increasing it to $*>(), ! POO,()i)(), its president will nndunht cd 1 y occupy a powerful and enviable position in the financial world, hot | 1 vonr correspondent does not helieve .that Mr. Maine would accept t ii?| position even conceding that ho could ha\c it, which is by no means certain. Mr. Maine is by nature, habit and education a politician, and I lie will never get out of politic- un: I iI lie dies. There wa- <ceiningl\ a good desil of friction among the republican Senator- when the MeKinlcv bill tiM reached the Senate, hut now that the finance commit tee of that bode has got down I > cork on the 'hill, it seems to have disappeared. ! and up to the pre.-ent time no ma ferial amendment - have been made by tlie committee, w hich i- now going over the bill. There are still rumors of great dissatisfaction, some of them going so far as to -a\ that republicans will introduce a substitute for the hill reported by the committee, if cwrtaiu changes which they want are not made, and other.that Senator Allison i- engaged in preparing a speech against this bill, and a protectivc taritl generally. All such stories must ho taken with allowances. The organization of the republican party has front its birth been one of its most prominent features, and the MoKinley tariff bill ia parly measure. It will bechanced no doubt, but that the changes will lie sutlioient to alVeet the character of the bill your correspondent does not believe. Another secret meeting of the l{epublican .National executive committee vva- held at Senator (Quay's residence here Friday night. Nothing has been ollicially given out except 11he election of I'owell Clavlou, of i Arkansas, ami N. H. Scott, of West Virginia, to ho additional members, and the election of II. ('. I'avne, of Wisconsin to till tho vacancy cause! h\ the death of Col. (iooilloe, ol Kentucky, and the adoption of a resolution concerning the death of Col. (Joodloe. But there is a leak somewhere and it is known that the committee had a somewhat stormy discussion over the proposed enactment of a federal election law bv Congress, Mr. Quay leading those opposed and Mr. Clarkson those favoring it. A bare majority voted with Mr. Quay against a federal election law. Tho financial condition of the nutional committee wan also dismissed and a number of suggestions made for raisin* some money. The Committee also inst ructcd Senator Quay to ask the Senate l-'i nance Committee to make several changes in the tariff bill which are asked for by the New Kngland Manufacturers. Congress, after its three days holiday, began to grind again today. Ii> members all had that we've hada-holiday look familiar to every schoolmaster and mistress throughout the land, as they took their res pective seats. In the Senate, the bill to place all imported lie plot's under the control of the several state laws having been passed, the .lottos | silver bill was brought tip ami its: friends say that it will stay up until disposed of. In the House, the river and harbor bill having passed, there was a good natnrcd rivalry between chairman of committees as to what should be taken up, which resulted in not much of anything being done. Senator Stewart paid bis respects to Maj. Powell of the (leological Survey, on the floor of the Senate in . . ! a live minute speech in which lie said that Maj. Powell had enormous: power in Congress because he gave employment to a lot of young men, j sous and relatives of Congress, and I that he kept an enormous lobby in Ur?wl.* " - .. ..oinn^iwii u> eonuoi me action of j Congress. "This vast bureau of go- | j ology and mineralogy is nothing," concluded the Senator, "but a mass of humbug and foolishness -a great lying- in hospital for lame ducks." Mr. Stewart's language was a little rough but ii contains a good deal of truth. It is a well known fact here that all of the positions under the geological Survey are "soft snaps,' ; nointY imi? both on aeeonnt of tlie* liberal salaries paid and tin* small amount of ivul work required. Since Speaker Heed slopped the sale of liquors by the drink in the IIou<e restaurant the Senate restaurant is 41??i:?_ .ucgular land olliee business in the liquor line. As soon a> Mr. Morton returns to Washington an effort is to be made to have him issue an order stopping the harro? in feat an of 1 h Senate restaurant. * IMi I :t: tin v A I! iunee ; et ine.isnre, tin II prov; l ug for the esta dishnunt of uhtivasttries Tor the storage 0f agricultural products has la en turned down l?\ t lie unanimous vi ic o| tlie lions'* com mi t tee on Ways and Mi-ans.
