The meeting of the Hoard of
Equalization to hear complaints was
held last Monday. Some complaints ,
were lodged and some adjustments
of valuation were made. The equalization
of assessments is an exceed-'
iugly difficult problem and to him
who satisfactorily solves it should
be awarded a premium for distinction.
The assessment in 1 lorry in
proportion to real value exceeds that
of any county in the State, and yet
ilit- urcn^fMiiriii nere in ine aggregate
is greatly bolow the intrinsic value.
This matter might profitably engage
the attention of the would be reformer
Captain Tillman.
A most disastrous and destructive
tornado passed over Louisville, Kv.,
last Thursday night. It leveled
everything in its path. Property
destroyed is estimated between one
and two million dollars, and human
lives about one hundred. Other
small towns suffered severely, but
the main force seems to have been
spent on Louisville. Large brick
buildings were completely demolish
ed, and in some instances, burying
scores of people in the ruins. The
Signal Service had in the morning
warned the people of the tornado,
hut no attention was paid to it. On
one street the wind carried oil' just
the front portion of tin? buildings
exposing the contents of the front
rooms to view. These calamities are
fearfully frequent and terrific.
We inadvertently omitted last
week to mention the re-organi/.ation
of the Horry Auxiliary Bible Society.
Rev. T. II. Law, tlie.Agent for
North and South Carolina, came to
our rescue and ii.fused new life into
the Society. The exercises were conducted
in the Presbyterian church
in the presence of a verv respectable
audience. The officers elected Lathe
ensuing year are: K. Norton,
President; I). T. McNeill, Secret an
9
and Treasurer, and the pastors of
the different local churches N icePresidents.
The membership fee
was placed at fifty cents and be
t w ec 11 thirty and forty on rolled their
names as members. A supply of Bibles
will be constantly kept on hand
for sale. This is a work in which
all christians can conscientiously
and enthusiastically engage. The I
word of (tod can enter places and
accomplish a work that no preacher
or col porter can. Mr. Law preached
a very plain and practical sermon
to children in the afternoon from
the text, ''I am the door." At night
he preached a most excellent sermon
from the parades in 15th chapter of
Luke, lie left on Monday and re-,
organized a Society at W'hiteville,
N. on Tuesday night.
Last Friday on our return home
from Columbia, feeling very drowsy
from not sleeping for two nights we
had prepared ourself for a comfortable
snooze on the train. The weather
heing warm \ve toolT the precau- i
tion to raise a sash to encourage I
healthy peaceful slumber. We were
awaked by a suffocating smoke in
the car and in our <1 wvn/1 ortmlil !..i,
could not imagine at lira! whence
the smoke'proceeded, whether from
the car afiro or from some other
source. The train was backing
which somewhat reassured us that
the cause was external to and sepa
rate from the train.
Somebody had aeeidently or maliciously
put tire in the woods that
morning and the wind blowing a
moderate gale hail carried it to the
railroad and' a pile of cord-wood
(lightwood), was burning furiously,
the flumes overlapping the railroad
track. It seemed that all the old
stumps and logs on the west side of
the track as far as we could see for
the smoke were burning and smoking,
and the wind was strong enough
and t'?e air heavy enough to keep
the smoke near the ground which
rendered passage along the track very
difficult and disagreeable. An opportune
rain diminished the flames
consequently reducing the smoke,
and thus enabled the engineer to
bring the train safely through. The
cross-ties were several times and in
different places on (Ire but were extinguished
before any damage was
done.
The April Numbor of lielfortV*
Mngftzine contains some very suggestive
and interesting articles. The
first article on "'The Free Coinage of
Silver" by M. L. Scudder, Jr., presents
some instructive facts on that
Icy in private life. "Florence Cainpbell's
Fate" is a story bv Helen M.
Hardener. 'Wife most notable article
perhaps is that by Frederick T.
done* under the caption. "Wanted:
A Christian Confession of Faith."
lie pleads for unity in the Christian
world and pithily asks: "Is it not
indicative of a perverted taste, that
in a matter of such transcendent
moment as religion, a man should
prefer to plaster on hi* back some
such hideous label as 'lhiptist,' lMelhodist,'
'FresbyUriun,' 'Fpix opalian,'
'Independent,' or 'Congregational ist,'
rather than the graml old name of
'Christian.' lie contends (lm(
