Knrroit Hoititv IIkkai.d:
In the issue of tlio IIukm.d for
August Nth I see a question asked
by "Veni." lie wanted others opinion
on tho question; if a person is
not a member of the church should
he be allowed to hold ollicial position
in the Sundav School'? Tho question
resolves itself into this: Is the'
Sunday School independent or does
itbolong to the church? * If independent
all perse lis whose names are on
the roll have equal privileges, whether
members of the church or not; but
if the Sunday School belong to the
Church none but Church members
can become members of the School.
Not until recently have such quesions
arose about Sunday Schools.
In the e.irly days of Sundav Schools
wo have no account of any being prohibited
from becoming members, and
how often have we heard Superinten- j
dents ask; why don't you come to
Sunday School; we want all to come
who will. What is required to become
a member of a Sunday school;
not any obligation, baptism or initiating
ceremony, but simply give
tho name to tho Secretary to ho enrolled.
Suppose none but church
members are allowed to become members
of the Sunday School, what will
those denominations, which do not re
ceivo mtie ciuiuren to the fellowship
of tlio church, do with the children?
They must either exclude them
or become sponsors for I hem. No
Sunday school, whether independent
or not, has any ecclesiastical authority,
but must be ruled by love.
