RESULTS OF STORM.

crash early this morningr.
? n
A laroe part of the mud hank
j along* the East river, near twentysixth
street, has heeen washed away,
and the water front in that neiohborI
hood presented a sorry looking* appearance.
()ver the city hung a
I dark nuiss of clouds "and mist all day.
Telegraph and telephone mixes are
' ?*ettin<* into hotter shape nj*ain, and.
| although some of them, wheio tlie
rule was most severe and whore
r?
i there was nothin?f to break its force,
1 are still in bad shape, it is becoming
possible for an electric current to
move some distance, without "changing
cars."
Many of the sound stealers, which
' did not dare to put to sea on Monday,
left their piers yesterday, as
their seemed to be no doubt that the
fury of the storm had boon spent.
{ The anxiety of the managers of the
Ocean Steamship company of Savannah
concerning the overdue steamer
Chattahoochee of that line has been
| allayed by a dispatch saying that the
I Chattahoochee, in company with the
steamsnip Mars, had put into Newport
News for coal and to esoape the
fury of the storm.
Scarcely had this welcome news
boon received, however, before a
message from the Marutime oxchange
was delivered to Mr. Walker,
th?) agent of the company, staling
that the Naoooohoe, the sister of tin;
Chattahoochee, had gone ashore in
tlio storm on the dangerous coast of
North Carolina, about seven miles
south of Cape I bitterns. The additional
information that the officers,
crew and passengers safe was
all that could be learned.
The Xacoooheo left Savannah Friday
with a crew of forty-one men
and a limited number of passengers.
I She carried a miscellaneous but valuable
cargo, principally cotton, pi?r
iron and oranges. The vessel and
cargo are worth about n'100,0()();
both are insured.
There nre'now outside somewhere
seven pilot boats which wore out in
the gale of Sunday, and which have
; not yet been tnghtedor heard from.
All of these carry their full complc|
ineut of six me% for handling tluj

course the. position is coveted mainly
on account of the patronage. With
I )epartmental and Imreau ollieers,
the private secretary is often as powerful
as the I'resilient, and the per- '

be tenderly eared for in the political

Senator <v>uav seems very little
concerned about the .sensation created

by his announcement that the Republicans
would bold with "a mailed j

The Inaugural Committee held a

received to the amount of

who expect to make a fortune by J
supplying the thousands who will j
be present on March fth. with food

I Ion. Joseph Chamberlain and his j
bride, nee Kndicott, and Lord Sack- '

for home on the Bourofotrne on Sat-!

ed for such a loss. No sooner djd
the excitement oyer the auction salo
of the llrflish Minister's effects subside,
than society wept for the loss i
of his Lord-ship's daughters. Strange
to say, the atmosphere, together with
the direction and velocity of the
