\Ve mentioned last week the serious
damage to growing crops hy the long continued
rains and this week we have to
chronicle Increased destruction. The rain
fall for tho last lew days has been enormous,
overflowing swamps and low lands
producing unknown damage to crops,
public, highways, railroads, A;e. The farmers
can hardly expect to realize more
than half the anticipated cotton crop in
t his section. 'Uie yield of crude turpen
tine for the current year is about exhausted,
the prospect for the turpentine producer
and farmer is disagreeably gloomy.
A late spring with devastating floods in
the autumn is disheartening, but to those
who are properly exercised by these calamities
good will come. Corn is .sprouting
on,the stalk and cotton rotting in the
boll.
The train did not reach Conway Monday
or Tuesday. It came down to Hug
Swamp on Monday morniag and found
some of the embankment on the North
side washed away, and while Mhe hands
worn repairing this washout another occurred
a few hundred yards behind. Those
two washouts wore small and soon repaired
hut one occurred in Maple. Hwainp
that may take a day or two to repair. Our
information is that about one half the embankment
on the north side of the swamp
is washed away. The water was running
over the railroad track on Monday even
ing so that pedestrians could not cross
over the swamp. The washout there is
complete for about one hundred and fifty
feet, as we are informed by some tailored
hands.
Slight washouts have also been made at
<'rahtree Swamp, hut as we are informed
can l> easily repaired-. The water has excavated
a drain from the railroed ditch to
an old drain running parallel with the
railroad, making an ugly hole just a toss
the street fpoin the Postoflice. Most of
the water takes thi* old drain.

which is suppressed by the hoard of
' health, lie usually stops at Westminister :
while in this city. Monday evening he :
complained of feeling ill. As he had
| trouble with Hright's disease for some
time, his symptoms were attributed to
that disease. Physicians visiting him
thought he would be out on Tuesday,
howi vor, lie became worse and began to
show symptoms of yellow fever. As the
day wore on the symptoms became more
marked, and no doubt was had of the nature
of the disease. It was then decided to
I move him to North I irot Iter's Island but it
I stormed so hard that it w is consequently
considered imprudent to remove htm so
far and, he was removed to the hos| tal
I mentioned. The board of health was not
1 informed of the ease until to day, when it
I caused consternation in the otllee. Kvery
thing in 'he apaitinent he occupied was
destroyed, and his room and the halls ,
, were thoroughly fumigated. President
liayliss decided to keep the olliee of the
i hoard of health open to-night for fear of
'any further cases. Doctor Ihiyllss, how
J ever, says that the etforts of the department
will probably prevent the spread of
the disease. Incase of an outbreak of
^ fever, he said, he was pr< pared to recoin
| date many hundreds of patients n North
j lirother's Island, lint lie feared no such
outbreak. Prof. Proctor waS about .V>
years of age ami robust. He said tiicro had
been no yellow fever in the part of tip'
country he had come from, and lie was
unable to account for his attack*

THE WAR TAX AND GETTING MARRIED.
Wilmington Stiir.
Suppose a young couple just marriod
winh to begin housc-liceping,
and not in a routed building, but in
one of thoir own, will they bo helped
or retarded by the Republican War
Tax? Rot ns see. There is a tariiT,
on lumber, it must bo remembered.;
I nd r the Mills bill there would be
a reduction of tax on clapboards of
from 8 to I 1 per cent., according to
wood; upon laths of 12. per cent.;
a id planed boards of from 8 to 22
percent. House furniture will be
reduced 14 per cent. In purchasing
j 850 worth of furniture now, under
the Republican Tariff, he would
have to pay 122,50 tax. The
Mills bill is an extremely moderate
affair. We c:>py the following
from a communication in the New
, York Times, Independent Republican,
which shows how small tho reduction
is over which Monopoly:
groans and the footers run wild:
