; place last Monday night from Numbers
xxiii 23. lie discussed the sue
cessful operation of christian missions
in various, apparently unfavorable
I fields, citing as illustrations, India,
China, Japan, Siam, Africa, See. The
christian church docs not keep itself
fully informed of what Cod is doing
I in heathern lands, and thus cannot
properly appreciate the great work
| being accomplished. Christian charI
actor suffers by this negligence. A
christian is blessed as he blesses, he
receives grace and blossings in proportion
as ho bosto\y>'. Grace improves
and increases by exercise, and
thoroby a christian becomes "strong
in the Lord and in tho strength of
his might." Tho lust two sentences
are yur application.

The State Democratic Convention
meets in Colombia to-day. It is
doubtful if anything further than the
r>
election of delegates to St. I /mis is
done. The primary system of nominating
State oflicors is almost certain
to bo repudiated. The effect of
that plan has been disastrously experienced
m Columbia and that will
have considerable weight it: determining
luke-warm supporters of that
plan to vote adversely in the State
Convention. The scheme is tbnght
with danger to tin party, and its
adoption may precipitate confusion
and nnnimositios that may result, in
the final defeat and overthrow of the
party. Strict conservatism in this
matter of selecting State oflieers, at
1 loast, is the safest rule.
