Five Ways to Stop or Cure a
Cold.
1. I lathe the foot in hot water and
drink a pint of hot lemonade. Then
sponge with salt water and remain
in a warm room.
2. Batho the face in very hot water
every live minutes for an hour. i
'I. SnuF up the nostril hot salt wa- .
ter every three hours.
4. Inhale ammonia or menthol.
r>. Tako four hours' active oxer-eise
in tho open air.
Summer colds are the worst of all
colds oftentimes, as it is then very
dillioult to protect ono*s self properly.
A ten ?rrain doso of quinine will usually
break up a cold in the beginning.
Anything that will set the
blood actively in circulation will do
it, whether it be drill's or the use of
a bucksaw.?MedWal i\retc8.

Aii interesting calculation has been
lately made by l'rof. Rogers of
Washington, lie tells us that the
dynamic power of a single pound of
good steam coal is equivalent to the
work of a man for one day; three
tons of the same coal will represent
a man's labor for twenty years; and
one square mile of a seam of coal
having a depth of four feet only will
represent as much work as 1,000,000
men can perform in twenty years.
Such calculations as those may serve
to remind us how very wasteful our
methods of burninir fuel must be, in
o
spite of all that has been done by
engineers in the way of economy.

r. Conkling's Fee.
There is a story of two 1 Rochester
men who lately wore in New York

them to consult Mr. Conkling, and!
they did so at some length and very
much to their satisfaction. As they
rose to go the spokesman said: "Mr.
Conkling, wo thank you for your advice,
which is very valuable to us.
When we ge' homo wo will send
you a check for *500." "Oh no, gentlemen,'

frepresentative Hemphill, of S.,
is pra ised for his anti-Protect ion
speech. The Washington correspondent
of the Augusta ('hroiiclr, a
Protection organ, says:
".Judge Culberson, of Texas, listened
very attentively to Mr. Hemphill's
legal argument. The judge is
counted the best lawyer in the House
and is chairman of the Judiciary
Committee. I heard him congratulate
Mr. Hemphill very earnestly on
his speech. Sir. Hemphill occupies
a place among the ablest younger
members, and ho always gets the attention
of the House whenever he
speaks. Really, he is the only man
who received the slightest attention
to-day. The other speeches were
delivered to an empty house. The
few that were present paid no atton- i
lion."
"You will kill yourself yet, John,"
said a sprightly girl, "if you don't
