This early publication of the
program is made in order to call
special attention to this important
matter. The date was chosen by
committee as especially favorable
to a large attendance. After the
Easter work has been closed np
and the strain of the extra labors
of the season is in a measure over,
a week’s vacation will be quite
agreeable to the hard-worked pas
tors, and a little trip to Philadel
phia to attend this conference will
not only be very pleasant, but in
every way profitable.
From ap examiuaiioaxif the pro.
gram it can safely be predicted
that the discussions will be of
great interest and exceedingly in
structive.
The social reception to be given
on Tuesday evening by the Luther
an Social Union of Philadelphia is
to be made a very attractive feature
of the conference.
All the sessions will be open to
the public and a large attendance
ia confidently expected.
Reduced rates at good betels will
be secured for all visitors and pub-
lication of the same mad* in due
time. M. W. Hamma,
Sec’y of Com. -
OUR PART IN THE GENERAL
CONFERENCE.
By the authority of the OAeral
Council, the General Synod and
the United Synod in the Sooth, a
notable General Conference of Lu
therans was held in Philadelphia,
December 27-29, 1898, and iheee
aame general bodies were overtured
by that largely attended conference
to a second general conference.
The General Conference appointed
Rev. U. E. Jacobs, D D.; the
General Synod appoint*d Rev.
M, W. Hamma, D. D , and the
United Synod appointed Rev. L L.
Smith a committee to arrange the
program for this conference. Phila
delphia was again selected as the
place and April 1-3 as the time for
the second conference. The pre-
gram for the second conference,
with the (nbjeete and essays, is
published by the secretary, Rev.
Dr. Hamma, in this issue of The
Viator. Each of the general bodies
has a finance committee to raise its
pro rata share of tte expense fund,
and at the last convention of the
United Synod at Winston Rev.
L. L. Smith, with the presidents
of the distuct synods, were consti
tuted said committee on onr part.
(See Minutes, pages 65, 66). The
amount needed from the United
Synod is 875, the General Council
raisiug $185 and the General Synod
$165. I respectfully urge the presi
dents.of the district synods in the
United Synod to raise the follow
ing amounts lor their respeytive
synods to make up said fund of
$75, this suggestion being on the
basis of the apportionment for
missions by the United Synod:
Virginia Synod, $12; Southwest
Virginia Synod, $9; South Caro
lina Synod, $16 80; North Caro
lina Synod, $14 20; Holston Syn
od, $4; Georgia Synod, $4; Ten
nessee Synod, $15— ,
I would also suggest that this
fund be remitted to Mr. J. W.
Eberly, cashier Massauutten Bank,
Strasburg, Va , who has kindly
consented to act as treasurer, and
who will forward this fund to the
treasurer of the General Conference
committee at Philadelphia.
The president of each diatrict
synod can secure the amount from
his synod in such ways as he may
deem'wisest and best, and as the
amount asked of each synod ia
small it Is to be hoped that it will
be readily and speedily collected
and remitted to our local treasurer.
For information, 1 mey say that
both the General Council and the
General Synod committees secure
their funds from laymen who are in
terested in the great object of bring
ing onr beloved Lutheran Church
much closer together.

MORAL AND SPIRITUAL VIC
TORIES.
A few weeks ago a man tapped
me on the shoulder and said, "1
have not drunk a drop of liqoor
since New year.' 1 He told this
with as much pride as the little
boy of six tells bis father of his
first .earned penny. The accusing
elder brother says, "Wiatis this
fortnight ot obttineneef I am
now a mao ot forty and have never
yet been drunk." No one except
the poor unfortunate knows its
coat of even this temporary victory
over temptation. Every victory to
be appreciated must be meaiored
by the coat, it cost David much
more to be virtuous tbau Paul.
Honesty came to the unjust tax
gatherer at a much higher price tbso
to the Galilean fishermen. The two
mites of tba poor widow cost her
moch more than the abundance of
the rich Pharisees cost them.
We most not coudoue sin and
evil habits, but we should always
have a kindly feeling and sym
pathy for the unfortunate in bis
efforts at reform. Give him a help
ing band You know not bow .of
ten he baa resolved to forsake the
barren busk* of ein, and failed be
cause of the needed the band of
sympathy. We need bands of sym
pathy aa well as hearts of sym
pathy.
Not all tbe decisive battles are
fought with sword and fire. We
have Waterloos ant Gettysburgs
over and over again iu tbe tbe in
dividual lives of men and women
around us. Their weapons are not
carnal but spiritual. Let ns then
put on tbe complete armor of
God, since “we wrestle not against
flesh and blood, but against prin
cipalities, against powers, against
spiritual wickedness.” “He that
ruletfa bis spirit is better than be
that taketh a city.”
J. P. Miller.
